Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-18-10  zanshin: With Akobian in time pressure and still some play in the game, maybe Wes should have played on. It does look drawish though...

Final position:

[+0.60] d=22 33...Rd8 34.h4 a6 35.Qc3 Kg8 36.f4 Rd5 37.Kh3 Kh7 38.Qf3 Red6 39.h5 Kg8 40.Qg4 Kh7 41.Qe2 (0:11.48) 41889kN

Jan-18-10  pulsar: Akobian entered into a difficult variation and deviated with 17...f5 sacrificing a pawn. Perhaps the first critical position is after Black's 18th move (second pawn sac),which Wesley declined with 19.a3.

Wesley found the the engine suggestion from the 23rd move but did not play the continuation 25.Rxc4, which is probably a significant attempt to win the game.

The final position is difficult to play for both sides when trying to win would entail much risk...

Jan-18-10  mysql: Any computer analysis on 25. Rxc4?
Jan-18-10  zanshin: <mysql> Here was my analysis at the time of the game. See follow up post after Wes played <25.Re3>.

Jan-19-10  zanshin: From: http://www.chessdom.com/corus-2010/...

GMBongVillamayor: Why Re3? I am not sure... maybe he was afraid of some backrank illusions?...Not easy to play for attack here after h6...

GMBongVillamayor: The crucial part of white came from 25th Re3...which was unclear...best should be 25. Rxc4, which could have gained the dangerous c-pawn by black and head for a pawn advantage heavy piece endgame. The final position we see Q vs. 2Rs is very difficult for white to win...at this point black's Rd7 consolidates the defense...it is very difficult to create any breakthroughs. We have to give credit to Akobian's stiff resistance...he played resourcefully after Wesly's 25.Re3 in time trouble...

Jan-25-10  mysql: 5.Rxc4 would still have been difficult to convert to a full-point. White would indeed be up a pawn, but the major pieces are still there.
