Robin01: This pace cannot continue, so I predict a draw in this game.
Jan-19-10  zanshin: After a rest, I think Shirov will continue. I predict 0 - 1.

kellmano: Agreed. Shirov is no mug and i bet he is very determined. Given who he has played so far, he must have a terrible run in. Predict 0-1

whiteshark: Everyhting is possible if a wily maniac is playing with white.
Jan-19-10  aragorn69: I think van Wely is due for an upset: 1-0!

Eyal: With this game Shirov would conclude the Dutch Championship phase of the tournament (after playing Tiviakov and Smeets in the previous rounds), and then with the game vs. Short in round 6 would conclude his tournament no.1. Then, in round 7, he's going to begin his tournament no.2, where he plays Nakamura, Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Anand, Kramnik, Karjakin, and Dominguez...
Jan-20-10  grebenarov: I predict that THIS time, (see: THIS time!), .... Shirov will win.
Jan-20-10  sagahelten: My prediction is that Shirov will take a break: Draw!
Jan-20-10  percyblakeney: Not the most drawish matchup ever, especially with the colours reversed though. All their games with Shirov as white:

Jan-20-10  grebenarov: Can't wait to see Carlsen-Shirov!
Jan-20-10  weisyschwarz: Palm reader assures me it is going to be a Slav Defense, which Shirov will win in 45 moves.
Jan-20-10  percyblakeney: van Wely's results as white against Shirov haven't been too impressive:

Hesam7: Remember that Shirov is a very inconsistent player, a van Wely win and a subsequent Shirov meltdown would not surprise me at all.

Hesam7: <percyblakeney: van Wely's results as white against Shirov haven't been too impressive>

But a lot of them are rapid or blindfold were the more talented player (Shirov) has an edge from the start.

chancho: van Wely's record is dismal with the white pieces against Shirov:

Who knows, maybe he's due to break that bad streak, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Jan-21-10  firebyrd: <Hesam7: <van Wely's results as white ... > But a lot of them are rapid or blindfold ...>

I am not sure if the list looks that much better even if we disregard the Amber games, and also the junior champ game from way back in 89:

1-0 1996 Hoogovens
0-1 1997 Klooster, Ter Apel
½-½ 1998 60th Hoogovens
½-½ 1999 Wijk aan Zee
0-1 2003 Wijk aan Zee
½-½ 2004 Wijk an Zee
0-1 2005 Bundesliga Final Weekend
0-1 2008 Aerosvit

Most notably, the last win was in 1996...

Jan-21-10  percyblakeney: At least van Wely has better results with white against some other top players lately, for example 3-0 against Kramnik after 1992, 2-0 against Leko after 1995, and then career scores like 2-0 against Svidler and 3-2 against Radjabov.
Jan-21-10  sagahelten: In Corus 2007 Shirov lost to van Wely in a Najdorf. One commentary was: "Poor Shirov. He no longer has that "fire on board" magic. His board is now getting waterhosed instead." How different now!

Domdaniel: Things change. At a London tournament in the 1980s Portisch raced away with 5/5, then lost most of his other games. And in one Soviet championship, Gufeld lost five in a row and then smashed Spassky. There are many other examples, and not just from *ye olden days*. Why should this lot be any different?

  shakespeare: from the database
Alexey Shirov beat Loek Van Wely 21 to 7, with 6 draws - and with Shirov on top like now - I think he wins. Interesting will be for sure the match against Carlsen - playing indirectly against his former nightmare Kasparov (17:0:15)

DB: Magnus Carlsen beat Alexey Shirov 5 to 2, with 5 draws

Jan-21-10  percyblakeney: Shirov has had some unusual streaks in Corus before. In 2001 he started with +5 -0 =3 but ended up 5-7th after a -3 finish. In 2007 he started with a draw followed by five losses, to be undefeated in the remaining rounds.

Eyal: Shirov has always been a streaky fellow, even though lately those tended to be bad streaks (immediately after winning the latest MTel, he started the 2009 Poikovsky tournament by losing four straight; he lost the first three at the 2008 Tal Memorial; and in Corus 2007, as <pb> noted, he started with a draw and then five straight losses).

BishopofBlunder: One hour to go. Just enough time to donate some chessbucks to the cause.
Jan-21-10  percyblakeney: Impossible to predict, and 2.57 on Shirov to win with black sounds low regardless of previous results. My guess is a draw.
