Jan-31-10  Knight13: <eternaloptimist: <Knight13> u r welcome. this was a great trnt. for carlsen. even though shirov got off to a big lead early, he faltered @ the end & carlsen took advantage of it.>

Yeah, dude. Shirov was beating up Patrons Who Screw Up until he had to go against the Smack-You-Downs. His teeth apparently weren't tight enough and fell out at the second half of the tournament, huh?

Domdaniel: This was one of the best Wij-aan-zee tournaments ever, whether Hoogovens or Corus. So many games showed that the top players must take risks in order to win against their peers -- and, crucially, are willing to try.

beenthere240: Amazing game to play over. 18. Nc4 comes out of the blue!
Jan-31-10  eternaloptimist: <knight13> shirov still had a very good trnt. overall though.
Jan-31-10  badest: <Yeah, dude. Shirov was beating up Patrons Who Screw Up until he had to go against the Smack-You-Downs...> Shirov did great... he could very well have won the whole thing.

Domdaniel: <Karnak> -- < Isn't "the b4 jokes" the name of a rock band?> Icelandic, I think, originally "B4 Jokul". Their singer is B4ork, and the drummer is NFork.

  Marmot PFL: Probably Linares
Jan-31-10  Knight13: <eternaloptimist, badest> Yes, yes, he didn't do bad. But he was no longer Mr. Fast Lane soon as he had to get in line with the upper class, was he? Failed high roller, seriously.
Jan-31-10  Magnusch: <Domdaniel> About the new rule for the kings (only in pieceless endings).

I think it's enough for allowing the king to go one or two squares <in the same direction> as you suggested. Otherwise it should be too strong.

Btw, I don't like the <en passant> move. I guess it was invented in the same time as the pawns were allowed to move two squares ahead from the start square!? I think it is a stupid and unnecessary move (e.p.).

Jan-31-10  Magnusch: Of course, mu suggestion shouldn't be taken too seriously, because it is only brainstorming..
Jan-31-10  eternaloptimist: <Knight13> agreed..."the upper class" definitely slowed shirov down. it's too bad because he doesn't win trnts. much anymore, whereas carlsen wins a lot of the trnts..

chancho: He won Mtel last year, so Shirov still has something left.

refutor: i think you guys are being too hard on shirov...when fischer/tal/kasparov/etc. got all those big scores in tournaments, they would draw v. their peers and pound the tailenders...shirov was following the recipe for success ;)

SatelliteDan: Wouldn't the "upper class" iclude Shirov since he tied for 2nd?
Jan-31-10  eternaloptimist: yes, mtel was a nice win for him. he definitely isn't washed up yet, but trnt. wins r still rare for him.
Jan-31-10  euripides: Reverting to 42.Ne3; I think the point may be that the knight cannot even sacrifice itself for the h pawn, so although White at least in some lines does get to queen he is then a piece down. E.g. - this is an illustrative line and there may well be better for both sides - 42.Ne3 Kg5 43.Kc3 Nxg2 44.Ng4 Kf4 45.Kb4 Kxf3 46.Nh2+ Kg3 47.Nf1+ Kf2 48.Nh2 Ne3 49.Kxa4 Kg2 50.Kb5 Kxh2 51.a4 Kg3 (Nc2 52.a5 Nd4+ 53.Kb6 Ne6 54.a6) 52.a5 h3 53.a6 h2 etc. In this line the black knight is impeded from getting to the queenside by the e pawn, but even if it could get to the queenside a lone knight against a king and rook's pawn achieves only a perpetual repetition rather than a stable blockade (the knight does better against other pawns).

Domdaniel: < Of course, mu suggestion shouldn't be taken too seriously, because it is only brainstorming..> On the contrary, I take any suggestion from <mu> seriously, whether the fabulous Queen or the lost continent.

And brainstorming is the source of so much creativity ...

Jan-31-10  Magnusch: <Domdaniel: ...And brainstorming is the source of so much creativity>

Hmm.. you have a point there I think. But may poor brain storms too much... generally speaking I think. I have zillions of ideas but 99.99999... % of them is bad. :-(

But that doesn't matter. I'm happy and <enjoying life>.

Jan-31-10  Magnusch: I was going to ask you what in ... did you mean by <mu>...

Then I saw it.. LOL!
