Strongest Force: Both kings will be drinking 40s until the police come...who will they grab first?

Eyal: <10.b4 h4 In the mentioned game in Corus Shirov played ... h4 with black. However, then he had support from the bishop on e7. Reflecting back, did Vallejo spend the time on move 7... g5 to create the novelty or to remember if Be7 was required? Time for the Spaniard if he can improve the game by Shirov (who won it against Van Wely in Corus)> (chessdom)
Feb-19-10  Mateo: 11...Rh6 is an interesting move. Now, if Topalov takes the Knight with the Bishop, Vallejo can retake with the Rook.
Feb-19-10  ROADDOG: Is f5 in Vallejo Pons near future?
Feb-19-10  Mateo: As Vallejo is ready to take with the Rook if Topalov plays Bxc6+, h3 for Black becomes an interesting threat. So 12.gxh4!? makes sense.

Sneaky: <what if he castles queenside?> Then Black's big dramatic assault on the kingside won't look as frightening. On the other hand, the queenside doesn't look very inviting considering that Black can play ...a5 at will and turn that little haven into swiss cheese.

What if the White King decides to chill out in the center of the board? Then I imagine moves like ...Bd6 ....Bf5 ...Qe7 ....Rd8 ...Re6 and all that force points at the White king.

none of the options are really safe then

Feb-19-10  Mateo: 12...h3 13.Bxc6+ Rxc6 could follow.
Feb-19-10  ajile: King safety is no longer in fashion these days.

:o)

Bobby Fiske: I didn't know anything about Vallejo, but read some interesting interview quotes on his players page here: Francisco Vallejo-Pons
-It says that he used to work with Topalov in the past. They must be "old friends", then...

tpstar: These games crack me up. If any of us would ever play 7 ... g5, 8 ... g4, 9 ... h5, 10 ... h4 & 11 ... Rh6!? in a tournament game, our colleagues would laugh their heads off and say we know nothing about chess.

Gotta hand it to Vallejo-Pons. This is definitely not a handy draw line.

Feb-19-10  uscfratingmybyear: I wonder about a white plan involving Q d2 to make his center pawns more flexible, observe the rook so he can play his kt to c5 and start taking control of the delicious white center squares.

Eyal: With Nb3, White has now a pretty standard setup for English Four Knights Kingside Fianchetto; not so Black, however...

JohnBoy: <tp> - i get stuff like this thrown at me in blitz games by masters all the time. It can be a bit disconcerting. Kind of like doing karate against a guy who charges.

Eyal: Considering Vallejo's mood today, we might expect 12...a5.

WinKing: I like the aggressiveness shown by Vallejo-Pons here. Let's hope he knows where he is going with this.
Feb-19-10  ajile: I kinda like the idea of ..c6 and ..h3 by Black.
Feb-19-10  AdrianP: There's definitely a sort of twisted logic to leaving the king in the centre when the other guy does a double fianchetto...

I do this all the time. Pizzas are more aerodynamic.

why c6 first? h3 now is already good, if white does not stop it

  Eyal: <13.Nc5 Interesting choice by Topalov! Now the pressure on b7 pawn is present and Vallejo has to resolve it by c6 or Bxc5. A deep computer line suggests 13. ... a5 14. Nxb7 Bxb7 15. Bxb7 axb4 16. axb4 Rxa1 17. Bxa1 Bxb4 18. O-O hxg3, but that certainly is not natural and will require lot's of time for calculation.> (chessdom)

Eyal: ...h3 is becoming a serious issue for Topalov to solve now, he may want to castle if only to allow Bh1 in such a case. Btw, in case of 14.0-0 engines recommend 14...f5 for Black...
