Open Defence: 17.dxc6 should simplify quickly if White wants a draw...

Eyal: <Aronian wants to put its Bishop on e8 where it will defend c6 and f7 pawns. A very good decision. After Be8 he will play Rac8 with some play in the center [...] Probably, Aronian is going to activate his dark-square Bishop via h6-h5 and Bg7-h6.> (chessdom)

Open Defence: hmmm looking at the position I thought Aronian might try to regroup the DSB via Bf8...

An Englishman: Good Morning: Ah, Sundays with a nice cup of Earl Grey and live chess. Life is good. <chancho>, nice work with Topalov's name, although I'm not certain he's been all that logical in some of his victories here.

As for the current game, we have an interesting struggle shaping up. Since I never played either side of the Slav, I have to ask for a little help. The point of the 6.Bxf6 line is that the Black QB should be the worst minor on the board. Aronian freed the piece early and easily; therefore, should he have not played ...Bg4 and ...Bxf3 when he had the chance?

Eyal: From chesspro (google translation): <In the final three parties had two white color. Alignment is good. Just do not play as he played with Grischuk and Vallejo, Aronian could not forgive, play an equally risky, he just has no right. Veselin, pity their fans, some of whom came to this party not only with popcorn, but with validol.>

Just so that people know this is from wikipedia:

<Methyl pentanoate has a moderate vascular dilatative action and sedative properties and is commonly used as a medication in Eastern Europe. Under the trade name <Validol>, it is used for as a treatment against nausea, mild heart disorders (cardalgia), motion sickness (including seasickness), nervousness and heartaches.>

Eyal: Btw, they're still following by transposition Ehlvest vs Kharlov, 1995 (where White indeed played the recommended 18.a3).

matey: If Aronian exchanges on d5, my guess is that Topalov will tske back with the king pawn because if he takes with the knight it will allow Aronian to exchange his not optimally placed knight. Any thoughts on this?

An Englishman: Good Morning: Black's KB should be happier on the a3-f8 diagonal. Should White play 18.a3 to prevent ...Bb4 indirectly pressuring the d-pawn?

Marmot PFL: In assessing this game I am trying to think of other lines where white gives up the bishop pair as early as move 6 and can claim any real advantage. Offhand I can't think of any.

lost in space: I think white is slightly better.

More space
peudo-passed d-pawn
lead in development
Better palcement of the pieces (rooks and knights)

Eyal: <Now 18.Qe3 looks promising. The idea of 18.Qe3 is to prevent Bc5 or Bb4 because a h6 pawn will be weak. Probably, Aronian is going to close the position after c6-c5.After that, White will have a strong d5 pawn.> (chessdom)

An Englishman: Good Morning: And here I sat thinking that both players were trying to avoid the pawn capture. What's interesting is that both recaptures have their merits. ...bxc6 keeps pawn control over d5, and the isolated c-pawn isn't that big a problem. ...Bxc6 keeps the pawn structure whole and gives a little more scope to the Bishop, whilst allowing Nc3-e5.
