  sleepyirv: Monday, so first we sac the Queen and... wait, no we don't sac the Queen! Uhh... I'm not prepared for this. Okay maybe we sac the rook? 38. Rh8+ Nxh8 39. Qg7#

And to think I was about to panic.

Apr-09-12  Olsonist: I reached for the queen first as well. And since chessgames.com is touch move ...
Apr-09-12  Nullifidian: 38. Rh8+ Nxh8 39. Qg7#

I wonder why the game was played out to the checkmate.

Apr-09-12  thegoldenband: <Olsonist: I reached for the queen first as well. And since chessgames.com is touch move ...>

At least you'll get your Queen back after 38. Qxg6 fxg6 39. Rh8+ Kf7 40. Rh7+ Kxf6 41. Rxd7, but I don't fancy your chances of drawing that rook ending.

  sevenseaman: Looks like White has been feeding 'poisoned' P s to his opponent; he is two short. But Black is about to croak.

1. Qxg6 fxg6 2. Rh8#

May be a puzzle but it cannot be puzzling for anyone on this site.

```````````````````````
28. Rh8+ Nxh8 Qg7#??
Lol! I am the sucker. Well done <CG>. 'He laughs best who laughs last'.
And I opened my mouth a tad too wide! (A drowsy Q sac was the opiate).
Apr-09-12  rilkefan: I was going to say that it's too bad the endgame after 38.Qxg6 fg 39.Rh8+ Kf7 40.Rh7+ is lost, because that would have been kind of funny in view of black's failure to resign after 35.Rh8+, but I wouldn't want to give any hint of an appearance of mocking a better problem solver.
  tcoxon39: A little easy, even for a Monday puzzle. Rook sac to free the g file and bring in the queen for mate.
  An Englishman: Good Evening: The two-mover at the end is actually the least interesting part of White's otherwise highly creative and imaginative attack. In particular, I liked how he secured his own King's safety by wandering out to the 3rd rank.
Apr-09-12  rilkefan: Stockfish hates 22.g5, 0.0, instead suggesting Bd4 maintaining the 0.8 or so advantage that white had held most of the game, give or take a bit. (By the way, probably 16.a4 was obvious to everyone but me - I guess I just didn't expect to see a4/b3/c4 in front of the king.) After 27 or 28...Rh5, black stays equal. After the cool 31...b5, white has to play accurately to handle tactics after ...Nxd5 to reach a small advantage.
Apr-09-12  viking78: 37.Rh8+ Nxh8 38.Qg7# What a bad game from a 2550 player. I wonder why he even played his 38th move...
Apr-09-12  VincentL: "Very Easy".
38. Rh8+ Nxh8 39. Qg7#.
  agb2002: White has a bishop for a knight and two pawns.
The knight prevents 38.Qg7#. Therefore, 38.Rh8+ Nxh8 39.Qg7#.
Au contraire, tout ce que je peux dire, pour moi une lunatic Lundi! 'Monsieur, tu as attache Lundi avec Mardi'.
  Once: Just about any sensible move by white ought to win. We could pile up on the h file with Qh3, with the idea of a queen-rook reloader on h8. Then black has nothing except timewasting computeresque piece drops.
But this is CG.com on a Monday. Once we discard the queen sac, all that is left is the rook sac - the Bf6 being too well posted to consider.
A nicely played attack by white, who never gave black a moment's peace. I've always been rather sceptical of the Alekhine, although to be fair it doesn't usually go down in flames quite as convincingly as in this game.
Apr-09-12  Tired Tim: The chess public is rarely satisfied ... either the loser played on too long (as is said to be the case here) or he resigned too early and did not allow his opponent to deliver mate.
.... and it's even possible he was in time trouble and didn't have time to worry about such niceties.
Apr-09-12  Limpin Kt: Easy monday!
Apr-09-12  Swedish Logician: I thought Rh8 en Qg7 was a little bit easy for an Insane one when I realized that today is already Monday ....
  morfishine: <38.Rh8+> followed by mate by the Queen
SAY WHAT?
The state of Texas allocated $600,000 of taxpayer money to conduct a government study to determine if government studies are a waste of taxpayer money.
Apr-09-12  stacase: Wham bam!
Apr-09-12  gofer: I must confess I immediately looked for a Queen Sac, 38 Qxg6 fxg6 39 Rh8+ Kf7 40 Rh7+ Kxf6 41 Rxd7 . But after being rather disappointed not to find one, I found the rook sac <39 Rh8 Nxh8 40 Qg7#>, but somehow I feel the week has started badly.
Like waking up and trying to get out of the bed on the wrong side...
...nice "Albatros" at the Masters!
Apr-09-12  Limpin Kt: I'm wondering where is <LTJ>. He should be very busy i think, otherwise he would have attended the daily puzzles.
