shakespeare: <Nigel Short: I am wrong. Kosteniuk was right - much as it galls me to say it. I overlooked something. > Never argue with the queen - an englishman should know :-)
May-04-10  Kazzak: Anand spent a long time evaluating his kingside, and then he moved 18... Bf8-e7 -- he was preparing this ending then. "sigh"
May-04-10  Sacsacmate: What do engines say after 47. Bc5 ?

Anybody ?

May-04-10  ajile: If Black pulls this out he's the Houdini of chess.
May-04-10  A Karpov Fan: so what was wrong with the <Short Plan>?
May-04-10  Kazzak: Has Kosteniuk stopped playing tournaments - it's more a conglomerate now, isn't it?

Nigel Short: You are right. Perhaps I shouldn't have opened that bottle of wine at lunchtime. It has been a long day...
May-04-10  ajile: <A Karpov Fan: so what was wrong with the <Short Plan>?>

You want the long version?

chrisowen: Stumps me now but black needs extra cover for his pawn and king. Hopefully it keep a good eye out trotting back and forth. I think Topa V, I rely on er promotion up the order of pawn in.
May-04-10  ajile: Now Black is back in bidness with ..Kg7.

May-04-10  ajile: I think Black will hold this now.

gawain: Nigel, I still admire you.

My little Hiarcs engine has for some time been giving me nothing more than +.7 for White in all variations and I felt that this could not be a win, even keeping in mind the weaknesses of engines in evaluating endgames.

lol

yeah, must have been short on detail.

Eyal: <DoesItHurt: Shipov + Kasparov way back:

36...Ke8

37.Kf4 Kf7!? 38.Kg5 Ba4 39.Kh6 Kg8 and if 40.h5 gxh5 41.Kxh5 - the idea is Kg5-h6, g2-g4-g5, Be5-g7!! and g5-g6, Then 41...Kf7 42.Kh6 Bc2!>

As Shipov indicated, that looks like yet another way (rather than Be8) of stopping that plan - put the king on f7 so that it would look after White's d-pawn, and the bishop on the b1-h7 diagonal, to stop an eventual g6.

DrGridlock: Now it's Kosteniuk who is talking about zugzwang:

<There maybe some kind of zugzwang. If White take the pawn on h5, then plays Kh6 and then pushes his pawns to f4 and g5. Black will need to retreat his bishop from the e8-h5 diagonal.>
