Gilmoy: This <4.cxd5> exchange line relieves Black's bad-B problem -- perhaps White does this to encourage Black to abandon the Q-side? After <6..Bf5> Krush plays the Caro-Kann, and <10..h6 11.h5> casts a lasting pall over Black's K-side pawns. <13..Bd6> looks too reactive: with <15.Nf5 18.g4> White seizes a lead in <pieces that don't spend time retreating>, projecting force forward -- contrast to Black's <18..Nh7>.

<19.Na4> is perplexing: Black wants his QN on f6 (controlling e4/g4?). <19..b6> looks like a pawn sac to push the d-pawn -- it just never feels enough against White's tank platoons on c. <33.a4!> leaves Black gasping: freezes weak a5, trumps the half-threats at b2/e2.

<36.Ra6> is evil: it's been on her mind since <11.h5>. <37.Qd4> is a charming finesse: not <37.Qxd2? Rcd8> and she can't see h6 -- so she uses the trick of hiding her R <behind the opponent's own pawn> just to not have to recapture it. After <37..Qb3 38.Rxd2> she no longer fears Rcd8, as Black has <weak-enough back rank> to Rxd8+ and Raa8.

Black's counterplay stumbles right into White's grand plan: she "allows" <31.d2>, musing: Well, my Q <wants to be there anyways> --

Shams: IIRC Krush is often a quick starter at tournaments. This is a great win for her. Would love to see her pick up a norm and contend.

PinnedPiece: No offense Greg, but hooray Irina!

7.Ngd2 variant takes some nerve, in my opinion.

Kaidanov's 9...bg6 perhaps not as solid as Karpov in1987 v. Kasparov:

Kasparov vs Karpov, 1987

Domdaniel: This is the same Irina Krush who some people thought was too 'weak' to play in the championship?

Oh, the deceptiveness of womankind.
