Kibitzer's Corner
May-29-10  Atking: How can White could lost this position? Afraid to win? No for a strong and experimented GM like Pia Cramling. Then time pressure at move 20? White looks clearly better around the move 20. To say 23.Bd2 Qg6 24.Be3 RxR+ 25.QxR BxB 26.fxB ~ 27.Qd4/d8 (26...Bxe4? 27.Qh8+ Kh7 28.Qh4+ wins the B)

In your line, <23.Bd2 Qg6 24.Be3 Rxd1+ 25.Qxd1>, black can do better than <25...BxB (i.e. Bxe3)> -- specifically, 25...Bxe4 (threat ...Qxg2#), and now 26.Qd8+ is answered by 26...Bf1, with an even game.

White lost when her b-pawn became undefendable later in the game.

  Ulhumbrus: An alternative to 12 dxc5 is 12 Na2 Ba5 13 e4 and on 13...cxd4?? 14 b4 traps Black's King's Bishop.

Although the move 16 Bxh7+ wins a pawn it concedes to Black the bishop pair and with it a very powerful unopposed white squared bishop. This suggests that Black has equality at least.

Suppose White tries 16 Bb1. On 16...Nxf3+ 17 gxf3 Qe5 18 f4! Black's Queen lacks access to the King side and on 18...Qc7 19 f3 supports the move Ne4. Assuming that White can defend this, Cramling is unlikely to want a position where the most that she can get is a draw. However perhaps Black has the advantage by now.

Max Lange: According to Giri, 26. h3? was one of two moves that lost the game for Cramling--to anybody except a grandmaster this move looks harmless (and even Chessbase does not rate it as a blunder). A more real blunder was 32.Nb6?? which Chessbase agrees is a bad move.
