Abdel Irada: Great play by one side. Black evidently hadn't yet learned of the perils of going pawn-bunting while one's king is insecure.

She also evidently wasn't familiar with the word "resign."

Maybe she just didn't learn it from others: B Farhat vs B Muhren, 1994

TheFocus: You know Barbara gets kidded about that last name of hers. Especially when her position stinks.

Abdel Irada: <TheFocus>: At the risk of being obtuse, I don't get your reference.

I believe her name is of Arabic origin, and means "delight" or "happiness." It's not clear what that has to do with a bad odor.

Unless, of course, you're thinking of the slight similarity of sound between her name and a word used to refer to a gaseous discharge from the bowels.

Yes. But thank you for the Arabic definition.

Abdel Irada: Since Farhat grew up in Brazil, where the principal language is Portuguese, and where there are many people of Arabic origin, I very much doubt anyone connected her name to the gaseous discharge.

Her first extensive contacts with English-speakers would then have come in adulthood, by which time one might hope that such puerile associations would not find expression in ridicule.
