Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-26-10  whiteshark: This final round game secured the first place for Ponomariov in Dortmund. This makes his play w/o much ambition more understandable.
Jul-26-10  polarmis: Sergey Shipov's commentary on this game, translated by Dana Mackenzie, is here: http://www.danamackenzie.com/blog/?...

e.g. after 27...e5 <...The Vietnamese grandmaster’s advantage has become noticeable. But at the same time, his disadvantage on the clock is also noteworthy: 0:31 - 0:13. We will now find out which is better from a practical point of view: to play slowly and very powerfully, or to play quickly and … not too badly.> (it turned out to be about equal!)

All of Shipov's commentaries on Dortmund can be found here: http://crestbook.com/en

Chessbase has some comments by Ponomariov and Le on the game: http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp...

They're pretty honest: e.g. Ponomariov after 17...g5!: <I had underestimated this. I had thought I would swap and then mate my opponent on the h-file. This was obviously nonsense.>

Jul-27-10  Ulhumbrus: According to Sergei Shipov, 30...exd4?! is a mistake made because of time pressure, and after 30...b6! instead, White cannot do anything.
Jul-27-10  guybrush: A very picturesque position after 36 Re2. I see from the comments above that it's equal. Black's position looks better to me, but I guess he can't find a way to get at White's queen side pawns, while protecting his 7th rank?
Jul-27-10  Gilmoy: It's like reading Larry Niven's chess fantasy series <The Pieces Go Away> ...
Jul-28-10  Ulhumbrus: 13 a4 prepares Nc5 and b4 as in the event of ...b5 White will have then the initiative on the a file. An alternative way of preparing the move Nc5 is 13 Qe2 clearing the square d3 for the QN so that if Black plays ...b6 in reply to Nc5, the N can withdraw to d3.
