Aug-05-10		sakii: Can anyone explain a win ? Black king can't come to help pass pawns e and d. White king can just shuffle between d2 and e3

Aug-05-10		zanshin: <sakii> I think you are right. I could not play through for a win using Rybka 4. The Black King could not get too adventurous either because he needs to keep an eye on the passed pawn on g5. Time could not have been a factor because they just passed the standard control. Hmmm ... a mystery to me.

Aug-05-10		BobCrisp: According to Fritz, it's a clear win for Black. She lets the white pawn run, and forces the e pawn through to promotion. From the final position, play might proceed: <44. Kd2 Kxe5 45. Ke3 Kf5 46. Kd2 e5 47. Ke3 e4 48. Kd2 Ke6 49. Ke3 Ke5 50. Kd2 Kf4 51. g6 e3+ 52. Ke1 Kf3 53. g7 d2+ 54. Kd1 Kf2 55. g8=Q e2+ 56. Kxd2 e1=Q+ 57. Kc2 Qe4+ 58. Kd2 Qxh4>

Aug-05-10		zanshin: <BobCrisp> In your line, Rybka 4 goes with <50...Kf5> and neither side makes progress. The evals flat line at -2.31 meaning Black has an advantage. However, the fact that the evals don't increase for Black indicate material advantage that cannot be converted into a win. At least, that's what happened for me - others may find something different.

Aug-05-10		hellopolgar: yes it's actually a draw...my houdini can't see a win either. this shows that, you need to play until your king gets mated, never resign!

Aug-06-10		nuwanda: of course its premature to resign in this position, but i think with best play its won for black. After the line given by <BobCrisp>, which is pretty much forced, we arrive at the following click for larger view i think this is extremely hard for white to defend and so black has excellent winning chances. of course due to the sheer number of lines one cannot give a forced winning line, but i let it play out Stockfish (with black) against rybka 3 and the game went 59.Qd5 Qf4+ 60.Kc2 h4 61.Kb1 h3 62.Qh5 h2 63.Ka2 Ke1 64.Qd5 Qf2 65.Qc6 Kd2 66.Qe4 b4 67.ab a3 68.b5 ab 69.Kxb2 Kd1 70.Kb1 Qg1 ending at this position click for larger view and white can safely resign its very interesting and instructive to see that the winning idea is a breakthrough on the queenside to open up the position of the white king so that black can act with (discovered) checks to avoid the perpetual ...
