Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-08-10  Dr. Funkenstein: I like how Berkes follows the typical plan when playing ultra-talented juniors: Play non-standard openings to get them out of their deep book knowledge and hope to get something out of the middle game. Here, he effectively counters Robson's attempts at active play and targets the weaknesses created at f5 and later d5.
Aug-08-10  cjgone: Weird opening.

tamar: Robson was caught in the Deep (D00) variation.
Aug-08-10  whiteshark: Black Knight were have you been?
Aug-09-10  ajile: This is a London System opening.
Aug-09-10  dx9293: <Dr. Funkenstein> I am (and have been for a few years now) skeptical that Robson is "ultra-talented."

Good tactician. Well-coached (Kaidanov, Onischuk). And ultra-booked up.

Berkes probably looked at the database while preparing and said "Hmm...I wonder how well this kid actually plays chess?"

Aug-11-10  Dr. Funkenstein: dx9293: What's your definition of "ultra-talented" then? Robson is a 2550 player and not even 16 yet. I agree there's no way of telling yet if he'll be a 2700 player, but he's certainly make a good start on that route. I think "ultra-talented" may even be an understatement as he has to be better than 99.9% of all the chess players in the world in his age group.
Aug-11-10  dx9293: <Dr. Funkenstein> Rating is not a measure of talent; rating is a measure of playing strength.

Robson is quite a strong player, but I feel there are A LOT of young players who are more talented than he is, IMHO. Still, Robson has surpassed or will surpass many of them.

I will say that I think his chances of becoming a 2700 player are good. He's not a "can't miss" prospect, but he has fair chances of entering the Top 25 or so.
