Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-22-10  Edmontonchessclub: Was there anything wrong with 22.g4, instead of giving away the piece?
Sep-22-10  libertyjack: No, it seems correct. Looks as though Lopez collapsed psychologically
Sep-22-10  Everett: <collapsed psychologically> Is that how we describe blunders nowadays?
Sep-25-10  faramarzrastin: What is the time limit for the first 40 moves?
Sep-26-10  Skakalec: Collapsed psychologically, blunders ... I call it "overlooked". He goes for a combination starting with Ba5 and calculates that after Qa5 Qe5 black has to play:

a) Rgg8 and after Qf5+ he winns the piece back

b) Rhg8 after which he plays h7, probably winning

c) Rh7 after which he plays Qf5+ again and after K move (Be6 Qf8 returns the piece) Nxf4 is probably winning

d) Bg7?? is out of question: hxg7 and winning
He simply overlooked:
e) Rgh6 after which everything is covered. (Qf5+ Be6)

Domdaniel: I watched Lopez play Svidler two years ago, losing the ending in a time scramble. Svidler conceded that the position was drawn, but his extra minute on the clock - plus 350 rating points - made a difference.

That was in the last round of a weekend swiss. This was Lopez's first olympiad game. Context counts.
