 | | sevenseaman: < sofouuk: <sevenseaman> did you know the chinese word for 'imagine' literally means 'think of an elephant'? ... ... just information :-) ...> Many thanks <sofouuk>. I find it thrilling to know the chinese have an appropriate imagery for a great word. It lends the thinking process a whopping personality!Could you spell it in English and give us some idea of its phonetics. |

| May-09-11 | | zb2cr: An unusual way to reach the mating pattern with Rook and Knight. 31. Qxg8+, Kxg8 (forced); 32. Rc8+!, and now either 32. ... Rf8 or 32. ... Kf7 is met by 33. Rf8#. The key to the sacrifice is the way White's LSB on d3 controls g6 and h7. This restricts the Black King's choices. |

 | | sevenseaman: <morf> I appreciate your taste and preference. But I keep on getting the gnawing feeling we might be impinging upon the dedication and the relevance of a technical site devoted to pure chess talk. <Once>'s and your assertions do relieve a little of my guilt. (a recall of <once>'s story about how the country vicar came to recollect where he had left his bike, still amuses me no end; OMG ten commandments, no less!). But of course we are all here because of the high quality chess. Without that we might scatter sooner than even we can imagine (elephant). I can only hope our humble efforts to relieve the monotony are seen in their perspective, that is to keep the site a bit entertainment oriented by putting in a morsel, a mite of fun - circus joker kind of thing. |

| May-09-11 | | Whitehat1963: Figured it was just a typical Monday queen sac, but I couldn't figure out how to make it work! Feel so stupid! |

 | | Domdaniel: < the chinese word for 'imagine' literally means 'think of an elephant'?> So how do you say "imagine an elephant"? Even trickier, how do you say "Don't imagine an elephant"? Try not to visualize pachyderms while responding. |
 |
| May-09-11 | | CHESSTTCAMPS: In this middlegame attacking position, white is down an exchange for a pawn, but the white minor pieces are strongly placed and coordinated to assist in the final attack. Black's counterattack on the g-file falls short because white has a forced mate with 31.Qxg8+ Kxg8 32.Rc8+ Qe8 33.Rxe8+ Kf7 (or Rf8) 34.R(x)f8#. If you saw 31.Rc8?? Rxg3?? 32.Rf8# but missed 31... Rxc8, you've got the pattern recognition, but need work on the analysis habits. |

 | | kingfu: There was a song called , "I Don't Like Mondays."
I do. I figured this one out , although it took some time off my clock. Don't ever get old. It makes your brain hurt if you play chess. |
 |
| May-09-11 | | MaxxLange: <Dr. J> no |
 |
| May-09-11 | | psmith: <kingfu> before that there was "Monday, Monday," which is what goes through my head when I do Monday puzzles. |

 | | Beancounter: It took me ages to find it but eventually... yes Qxg8+ |
 |
May-09-11
 | | gawain: Easy but interesting. The Queen sac on g8 paves the way for rook check and mate. |
 |

 | | kevin86: A bit complicated (for a Monday):White forces mate by :31 xg8+ xg8 32 c8+ f7 (interpositions don't help) 33 f8#.Has an Arabian-Mate look. |

 | | David2009: <Once: <mike1> 30...Rg6 is Fritz's preferred move instead of 30....Rg8.> The ever-optimistic Crafty End Game Trainer prefers to sacrifice a Pawn with 30...b5!? intending to meet 31 Bxb5 with Qf5, and 31 Nxb5 with 31...Rg8. I have no idea how White wins this one, or why Fritz prefers 30...Rg6. Link to the position just before White plays 30 f3: http://www.chessvideos.tv/endgame-t...
You are White, drag and drop the move you want to make (starting with 30 f3 to follow the game line). |

 | | dzechiel: White to move (31?). White has an knight and pawn for a rook. "Very Easy." Sorry for the late post, I never turned on my computer yesterday. But this does look very easy. It's mate-in-three after 31 Qxg8+ Kxg8 32 Rc8+ Kf7
On 32...Rf8 33 Rxf8# is still checkmate.
33 Rf8#
A very pretty final position. |

 | | Ghuzultyy: Let's go few moves back.
Move 25. Black to play.
click for larger viewBlack has two really strong defences here. Lets see.
A)<25...Qa4!>
Forks the bishop and the rook.
26.Be2? would be weak because 26...Qf4! stops all attacking chances. White has to play <26.Qd3>
Note that its better than Qe2 because it also threathens mate from h7. <26...Qh4!>
The queen is running the board for defence.
<27.Ne4>
Only good move.
click for larger viewBlack is quite good.
Another good defence;
B)<25...Bh6! 26.Qxe5 Qh5!! 27.Qe6+ Kh8 28.Nf3 Rf6 29.Qe2> This is quite good too.
click for larger viewCouldn't look deeply at the next moves
I have to go, I will post them later. |
 |
| May-09-11 | | cyclon: 31.Qxg8+ Kxg8 32.Rc8+ and mates in two. |

 | | fm avari viraf: I'm sure many would not find this very easy as there are few illusive alternatives leading us nowhere. But after a wary glance, I could spot the Queen sac 31.Qxg8+ Kxg8 32.Rc8+ Kf7 33.Rf8# |
 |
| May-09-11 | | ZUGZWANG67: 31.Qxg8+ Kxg8 32.Rc8+ Kf7 33.Rf8 is mate. Kind of hybrid Arabic one. |
 |
| May-09-11 | | newshutz: not exactly game of the day material, but "It's Orlova, but the shouting" would make a good pun. |
 |
| May-09-11 | | newton296: <Overzealous: Way too easy. I know it's Monday but come on, at least have a puzzle with a couple different possibilities. Or where the obvious first candidate move isn't the right move.> complain, complain, complain, complain complain, complain, complain, complain complain, complain, complain, complain complain, complain, complain, complain ! if you know of a better sight for chess puzzles please go. I for one appreciate the hard work that cg puts into finding these games for us. keep up the good work cg! |
 |
| May-09-11 | | MountainMatt: 31. Qxg8+ is, of course, the winner. I'm fairly new to this site, coming here a few months now, and I have to say, Mondays do seem a little too "queen sac" heavy. There are other easy, and yet still interesting, moves to spot besides queen sacs! |
 |
| May-09-11 | | Nullifidian: Saw this all within seconds. I do love Mondays. :-D
31. xg8+ frees the back rank for the rook. Play continues: 31... xg8 32. c8+ e8 33. xe8+ f7/ f8 34. f8#/ xf8# |
 |
| May-09-11 | | WhiteRook48: 31 Qxg8+ easy, then 31...Kxg8 32 Rc8+ and 33 Rf8# |
 |
| May-09-11 | | TheTamale: Well, judging from the comments here I must be quite the dunce, since I didn't get it, and I even saw the first move. Sigh. |
 |
May-09-11
 | | Marmot PFL: easy problem, but a question is why does black play Rg8? White was threatening to trap the queen though with Rc1-c4-h4, and there isn't much that black can do about it. |
