Oct-21-10  Fezzik: Playing on to bare kings... Ridiculous.

plang: Why, I think it is refreshing.
Oct-21-10  whiteshark: ... plus you don't have to offer a draw.
Oct-21-10  TheRavenPK: ..and we don't have to wonder why after 52. Rxd2 Gashimov would offer a draw.
Oct-21-10  Eyal: Four posts already and still no one with the obligatory joke that in the final position White has the initiative because he controls the opposition?
Oct-21-10  Eyal: Seriously though, a rather strange game. Gashimov’s opening experiment with 11…Ng5?! (instead of the more standard …Nxd2) turned out to be very dubious, and after 12.f4! White establishes a dominating position (12…Qg4 would run into 13.d5, followed by e4, Ba3, Rae1 etc.). 17.Rxe4 is a nice idea – 17…Bxe4, of course, loses to 18.Bxe4 with the double threat of Bxa8 and Bxh7+/g6.

By move 24 White might be already winning by force with Rfe1! (instead of Qb3) – e.g., 24… Bxd5 (24... Rxe5 25. Rxe5 d6 26. Re7 Bxd5 27. c4!) 25. Rxe8+ Rxe8 (25...Nxe8 26.Bxh7+ Kh8 27.Be4!) 26. Rxe8+ Nxe8 27. Bxh7+ Kh8 28. c4! Be6 (28... Bg8 29. Bxg8 Kxg8 30. Qe4 Kf8 31. Qf5+) 29.Bg6 Nd6/f6 30.Qb1 Bg8 31.g3! to be followed by h4-h5-Qb8 while Black is paralyzed.

Wang Yue kept missing several good tactical opportunities in the next few moves – e.g., 27.Qb7! Rf8 28.Bxd5+ Nxd5 (28...cxd5 29.h4! Qxh4 [the knight on f6 has to defend d5] 30.Nf3 Qh6 31.exf6) 29.Qxd7 Nf4 (29...Qxg5 30.Qe6+; 29...Rxf1+ 30.Kxf1 with decisive mating threats) 30.Qg4 Ne2+ 31.Qxe2 Rxf1+ 32.Qxf1 Qxg5 33.Qc4+ Kh8 34.Qe4; the last chance to keep a significant advantage might have been 32.Qb6! Eventually, White has to fight for the draw in the rook endgame.

Oct-21-10  percyblakeney: If Wang Yue has to fight for the draw from a position like he had in this game against Gashimov I wonder if he will win any games in Nanjing, but maybe he just had a bad day.
Oct-21-10  Eyal: From the chessvibes report: <After the first round Wang Yue was asked by a local reporter whether he was planning to win some games.>
Oct-21-10  whiteshark: Good question!
