Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-24-10  Eyal: That's already the third time in which Gashimov avoids the Benoni in this tournament - maybe he did decide to drop it, at least in events of this level.
Oct-24-10  lost in space: Boring concrete chess by black. Uninspired.

plang: A draw with black against Anand is always a decent result.
Oct-24-10  lost in space: The result is good, the way how Black played stays boring.
Oct-24-10  Brandon plays: In the final position white was forcing the repetition. There's really no way to justify losing the a pawn I think.
Oct-24-10  lost in space: Only fools and dead men/women do not change their opinion.

Having in mind that white has one tempo more and that the player having white is world chess champ I have to add: Also uninspired by white and no reason to complain about blacks play.

Lincoln didn't change his mind. He kept the Union together, despite bad public opinion and horrible losses on the battlefield.

Martin Luther King didn't change his opinion. He believed in equal rights for all.

Jerry Jones didn't change his mind. He kept Wade Phillips, and ....well wait a minute...two out of three ain't bad.

Oct-24-10  lost in space: com'on, don't take it too serious,<HeMateMe>, I was needing a saying for reasoning my changed opinion

:-)

Oct-24-10  arnaud1959: For me this is a Grunfeld with a different move order.
Oct-24-10  whiteshark: <<9...b6> was the key move>, Gashimov explained at the press conference.

<I saw that in some games the move 9...Bc8 was played immediately instead of 9...b6. But then Black played ...b6 and Bb7, so probably after 9...b6 I just won a tempo, because now White is forced to play 10.h3 and I go 10...Bc8. If you start with 9...Bc8 White doesn't play h3.>

Well, the fact 9...b6 is indeed the standard move and much more popular than ...Bc8 (Opening Explorer) might have been a pointer...

Oct-24-10  whiteshark: Right <Eyal> and thanks for pointing out! It seems that <10...Bc8> is the actual reassessment. It has already been played, though. Opening Explorer
Oct-25-10  Thesaint8x: I do hope Vishy plays 1.e4 more often.Against Magnus in a future world championship game will Vishy dare 1e4?

perfidious: <HeHateMe> There's always room for change--Jones may yet can Phillips, despite the vote of confidence!
Oct-25-10  tonsillolith: <HeMateMe> For some reason I'm reminded by a quote by Stephen Colbert regarding the 43rd President of the United States, "You know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday that he believed on Monday....no matter what happened Tuesday."

HeMateMe: Who was President No. 43? I usually vote for "None of the Above", if the option is available in the voting booth.

Well 10. h3 is not forced, it is just that White does not have any options that would ensure any kind of advantage (10. Bd2 Ne4!). I am guessing but it seems to me that 8. cxd5 might be dubious. Instead he can play 8. Qb3 immediately:

A) 8. ... dxc4?? 9. Qxb7

B) 8. ... Qc7? 9. cxd5

C) 8. ... b6 9. h3 Bc8 (9. ... Bxf3 is worse) 10. Bd2 Bb7 (in the game Black could play ... Nc6 but now that square is occupied by a pawn) 11. Rfc1 e6 (if not White plays cxd5-Rc2-Rac1 and takes over the c-file) 12. a4 a5 13. cxd5 exd5 14. Ne5 Nbd7 15. f4 and White has a pleasant position.

D) 8. ... Qb6 9. h3 Bxf3 (9. ... Bc8 makes no sense with the Queen on b6) 10. Bxf3 e6 11. Bd2 Nbd7 12. Rfd1 and White has one of those nice anti-Slav positions with the bishop pair advantage.

Penguincw: 10...Bc8 surprised me a bit. Bring the bishop back home but then getting ready t o place it on b7, where it will better placed.
