 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: <Shams>, I think that if White has any edge at all, it consists of the b1-h7 diagonal. Obviously, Black can meet any threats to the h7 pawn simply by moving it to h6, but if White can drive the Nf5 to a more passive square he might have a slight plus. Currently, I'm looking at 11...Nh4!?; 12.Bxh7+!?,Kxh7; 13.Ng5+,Kg6; 14.Qd3+,Bf5. Ridiculous, of course, hence my sort of variation. |
| Oct-27-10 | | pulsar: Looks like a highly original opening to me. Does anyone know where exactly did they veer from known games/theory. |
| Oct-27-10 | | ajile: <An Englishman: Good Afternoon: <Shams>, I think that if White has any edge at all, it consists of the b1-h7 diagonal.> I agree. And Black would rather have the knight on f6 vs f5. Black has to watch for sacs on h7. |

 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Technically, Carlsen deviated from the only game with 10...Bd6 by playing Bd3 instead of Nbd2. They can still transpose back to the stem game. Nijboer vs G Meier, 2010 |
| Oct-27-10 | | pulsar: <An Englishman> Thank you! |
| Oct-27-10 | | MTuraga: Pawn structure is symmetrical which could lead to a draw. |
Oct-27-10
 | | Wild Bill: If anybody wondering, Topa and Bacrot are playing a less interesting game than this one. Gashimov and Wang are each trying not to lose their game against each other, and it looks like both will succeed. |
Oct-27-10
 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: I'm trying to figure out if Carlsen's play is too subtle for my old and feeble mind, or if he's just too lackadaisical today. And I can't--after all, I have an old and feeble mind. |

 | | moronovich: <Shams> Carlsen and Aronian are often playing tennis together during tournaments. |
| Oct-27-10 | | ajile: I think White would like to trade his dark squared bishop for Black's DSB. |
| Oct-27-10 | | ajile: Black's knights are on horrible squares. Not sure how White takes advantage of this though. |

 | | Richard Taylor: I just stumbled on live chess game that's actually on during New Zealand day time - when did this tournament start? I've been playing in one myself so was busy..hmm...well..in our time!! So China is more or less on top of Kiwiland. So many are so late at night if in Europe or wherever else...it is 8.24 pm here. Well, I'll be flogged. |
Oct-27-10
 | | Richard Taylor: This is a strange opening. The Kasparov attack to the Berlin? |
| Oct-27-10 | | marcwordsmith: <shams>, <moronovich> Carlsen and Aronian are my two favorite GMs. It will be hard to know whom to root for if they play each other in the final candidates' match. But I'm afraid Aronian might not get past Gelfand, and Carlsen might not get past Kramnik. Just based on history. |
Oct-27-10
 | | moronovich: <marcwordsmith> You could perhaps root for both!?Kind of win-win situation, that often works for me. |
Oct-27-10
 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Looking at 15.Ne5, because I don't like 15.Nfd2,Bg4; 16.Be2,Nf4. 15.Nxh4,Qxh4 probably isn't fatal for White, but I instinctively recoil from inviting the opponent's Queen this close to my King. |
Oct-27-10
 | | moronovich: This seems to be heading for an uneventfull draw, which is not a bad result for both players. |
Oct-27-10
 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: So Carlsen proceeds to do just that. Looking at 16.Bf5,Qf6; 0.5-0.5. |
| Oct-27-10 | | pulsar: Probably 16.g3 it resembles a Spanish Marshall, without the sac and White's LSB is placed ... on b1-h7 diagonal instead of a2-g8. And Black's Knight is on g6. And... |
Oct-27-10
 | | Eyal: 15.Ne5? would have been a bad tactical mistake, btw, because of 15...Bxe5 16.dxe5 (16.Bxg6 Bxh2+ and 17...Nxg6) 16...Bh3! (17.gxh3 Nf3+ and 18....Nxe1). |
Oct-27-10
 | | An Englishman: Good Afternoon: What is this, a Marshall Gambit without the Gambit? |
| Oct-27-10 | | MTuraga: Anand could force a weakness in Carlsen's castle. Will he be able to exploit it? An interesting middle game in progress. |
| Oct-27-10 | | pulsar: <An Englishman: Good Afternoon: What is this, a Marshall Gambit without the Gambit?> Then it's Marshall, or in a spirit similar to. The man must be turning on his grave: That's not how you should play it, gentlemen! |
Oct-27-10
 | | moronovich: <An Englishman> Yeah my thoughts too.Looks like a marshall but also some serious deviations. |
Oct-27-10
 | | sofouuk: <An interesting middle game in progress> gwarsh, some people are easy to please :-) well the position is not quite dead yet, but if carlsen manages to outplay anand from here i'll be dumbstruck |
