Jan-26-11		arnaud1959: This time Kramnik didn't try the Pirc against Smeets.

Jan-26-11		KingG: I think the Pirc would have lost a lot of the surprise element. There were good reasons for wanting to play a Berlin endgame against Smeets, but unfortunately for Kramnik he didn't comply. In hindsight, perhaps a Sicilian would have been a better choice.

Jan-26-11		Marmot PFL: Smeets beat Nepomniatchi, who beat Carlsen, who beat Nakamura, who last time beat Kramnik. Therefore Kramnik was happy to draw. He usually is with black.

Jan-27-11		Eyal: This line looks like one of the most sterile in existence - it makes the Exchange French looks exciting by comparison. 13...c6 is a novelty, btw, varying from some cutting-edge 19th century theory (Steinitz vs Zukertort, 1886, Swiderski vs W Meiners, 1899).

Jan-27-11		perfidious: Meiners' TN in the latter game is unlikely to be repeated, one would think. Even the wretched Berlin Wall would have been an improvement over this game-and that's saying a great deal.
