  Ulhumbrus: <talisman: C4 FOR BLACK...TRADE off bishop for knight...to double white pawns on the e file. maybe?> It is conceivable that on 41...c4 42 Ra7 Bc5 43 Rc7 Bxe3 44 Rxe3 Rxe3 45 fxe3 Re2 46 Rxc4 Rxe3 47 Kg2 Rxe5 the Rook and pawn ending is won for Black. Or it may be drawn. Perhaps the databases can tell us.

  Marmot PFL: 41...c4 42 Rxa7 Bc5 43 Ra4 Bxe3 44 fe3 the c pawn is pinned and Rxe5 Rxc4 is probably drawn as ulhumbrus mentioned

Eyal: Yes, that was a sideline that isn't relevant to what's going on right now. Anyway, Giri can at least be thankful that he got this position to think about right <after> the time control. He has to make a difficult decision now, and it would have been even more difficult on move 40.

achieve: <but still I am amazed by Giri's ability at only 17.> Fully agreed, with the note that Giri has still some 6 months of sweet sixteen to go.

Ulhumbrus: <Domdaniel: <Ulhumbrus> - < space is an illusion> Quite an interesting idea, actually. As we are currently in cyberspace I cannot even refute it with a kick, thus, in the style of Dr Johnson.> In the present case to say that space is an illusion means that the use of this space and so the benefits of possessing it are denied to you eg if an opposing bishop controls it, so that possession of it can mislead or present an illusion of benefits that are in fact denied.

Domdaniel: Databases won't tell us much. There are 9 or 10 pieces too many for tablebases to be useful, and it's extremely unlikely that an identical position has turned up before.
Jan-29-11  duchamp64: so what about ...h5 Rxa7 Rxe5 as suggested by Rogers?

achieve: Calculation time for Giri - just pure and hard counting - followed by a mathematically supported decision. But these guys "feel their way through" a remarkable lot.

technical draw: The age difference would suggest a competition similar to Keres/Fischer in 1959.

Eyal: <so what about ...h5 Rxa7 Rxe5 as suggested by Rogers?> 43.Rd1, to double rooks on the 7th, should probably give White enough counterplay to draw.

Bobwhoosta: (This is going to sound really dumb):

I was watching the Kibitz, and thought to myself "Wow, is EVERYONE here a Premium Member???"

DUH!!!

  Ulhumbrus: Giri may have let a win slip by playing 41...c4 instead of 41...Rb7. Now one sequence which looks like a draw is 42 Rxa7 Bc5 43 Rc7 Bxe3 44 Rxe3 Rxe3 45 fxe3 Re2 46 Kg2 Rxe3 47 Rxc4 Rxe5 48 Rxg4+. However After 42 Rxa7 Black need not play 42..Bc5 but can play to push the c pawn instead by 42..c3 or 43...Bb4.

sbevan: on the other hand, to quote GM Roger's
"Giri finally moves, and he playes the move Anand likely feared most. If now 42. Rxa7 then 42...Bc5 43.Ra8+ Kh7 leaves White in serious trouble."

DUH!!!> It is a reasonable question if you either do not know - or have forgotten - that the live games site is restricted to premium members. Besides, as one kibitzer said, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.

queenfortwopawns: Though I've been an Anand fan all my life (and want him to win this tourney), it is great to see the young ones do well. Well done Giri, regardless of how this game ends! And if Naka wins this tournament, that'd be nice as well. (Though we might have to put up with him saying how superb he was :) )

talisman: kinda get the feeling anand is looking at pushing that shaky e pawn.

Arcturus: I liked c4, Bc4 is available now and Rxe5 can also be available after white plays Rxa7 as in many lines Nxc4 loses for white.

Ulhumbrus: <Arcturus: I liked c4, Bc4 is available now and Rxe5 can also be available after white plays Rxa7 as in many lines Nxc4 loses for white.> The trouble is that White can place his Rook on c7 behind Black's passed c pawn before the pawn reaches c3, never mind c2.
