Rob Morrison: Thanks chessgames.com for fixing the score here. It showed as a draw until recently. I played this as black at the 1981 Youth Olympiade in Graz, Austria. My TN, 8. . . Qb6, was commented on favourably by Tal in the notes to Informant 32/248. (Note: Informant 32 incorrectly gives black as "G. Morrison" in the index.)

That said, I'm not aware of any strong player having used 8. . . Qb6 since this game and so I suspect that some commentator somewhere found something wrong with it. Anyone have a refutation to offer?

Rob Morrison: I see this game now has its own "stem game" page:

Excellent. Turns out this line was subsequently played with black up to move 8 four times by Taimanov and twice by Romanishin. Given that Tal commented on my 8. . . Qb6 in Informant 32/248 (hey, he gave it an exclamation mark), Taimanov and Romanishin, among others, must have known about it.

So why no takers since then? I still don't see why it isn't at least playable. And I think it had terrific surprise value against Guerra.

An Englishman: Good Evening: This must have been quite the disturbing surprise, and receiving the "!" from Tal must rank amongst the highest praise a player can achieve--unless!--Tal had found a refutation and wanted someone to try 8...Qb6 against him. Has anyone unleashed a silicon monster upon this curious innovation?

Rob Morrison: Yes, I thought of that. I too would be interested in what the silicon monster would have to say.
