optimal play: This was the seventh game, played on 2nd February 1875, in a match for the first to five wins.

Going into this game, Goldsmith led Fisher by 4 wins to 2 (with so far no draws). Thus, Goldsmith only needed one more win for the match.

2.f4 Despite losing game 5 with the King's Gambit, and unable to afford to lose another game in this match, Fisher decides to give it another go.

10...Qd7? better is 10...Rg8

14...Nf4? better is 14...Rf8

16...Nxd5? better is 16...Na5

19...Bf4? better is 19...a5

20...Qh7?? is a blunder and leaves the position hopeless, 20...Nc6 might have still given black a chance to draw.

Too many inferior moves by Goldsmith in this game.

Finish after 30.Qg3 if 30...Kd7 then 31.Qg4+ Re6 32.Rf6 Qe7 33.Qf5 wins

Match score at the end of game 7 :-

0-0-1-1-0-0-1 (3/7) [+3 =0 -4] Fisher

1-1-0-0-1-1-0 (4/7) [+4 =0 -3] Goldsmith

And Goldsmith still only needs one more win to take the match.
