Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-22-11  Ulhumbrus: The move 20 Re2 prevents White from answering 20...b5 with 21 cxb5, as then 21...Nxb5 skewers the Rooks. This suggests 20 Re3. In their commentary on the official site, the grandmasters Ronen Har Zvi and Joel Benjamin mentioned that if White were to double his Rooks on the e file, the e4 pawn would then be pinned and so enable White to play the manoeuvre Nc5-d3 followed by Nd3-e5.

Carlsen could have saved himself with:

43.♖a6 a3 44.c5 ♖a1+ 45.♔f2 a2 46.c6 ♖h1 47.♖a7+ ♔d8 48.e6 a1=♕ 49.c7+ ♔c8 50.♖xa1 ♖xa1 51.e7 ♖a2+ 52.♔xf3 ♖a3+ 53.♔e4 and here white even wins. 48…♖c1 draws for black, as well as earlier deviations from this line - 46...♖c1 etc.

Mar-23-11  thendcomes: @b3wins: nice line, thanks for that. I was wondering why Carlsen didn't continue 45. Rxf3 as it appeared he was planning. Does it lose immediately? I can't see why he altered his plan.
