May-13-11  Pyke: Isn't it a mere thing of probability by now that White finally wins one?

Come on Kramnik, today's as good a day as any!

lost in space: <<technical draw>: What's all this talk about controlled defense and controlled offense? Whatever happened to just making good moves?>

Yes, but were is the contradiction?

jessicafischerqueen: <Dom> you told me you stopped playing the English because you "got tired of people playing c4"

QUESTION: Why isn't there an Irish Opening?

kellmano: Perhaps Grischuk has been preparing using the cg database:

Opening Explorer

Looking good at move 5. I wonder if he tested it with little chess partner.

Domdaniel: <Jess> 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nxe5 is the Irish (or Chicago) Gambit. Its entirely fictional inventor is reputed to have said "I didn't see that the pawn was guarded". Some see this as an ethnic slur, but I'm too dim to worry about that.

jessicafischerqueen: Thanks <Dom> that is indeed a vigorous opening, favored by Shane McGowan if I'm not mistaken.

Are you aware that <Kamsky> does most of his thinking with his eyes closed?

He sits at the board and has his face covered with his hands. If he takes his hands away, his eyes are still closed.

Possibly he plays better blindfolded.

Jack Kerouac: JessicaFischerQueen-<why isn't there an Irish Opening?> When myself and Cassady would play chess I usually chose the Irish Opening. Beer to mouth one.

May-13-11  Pyke: The only game with 8. c5 in this database:

D Shengelia vs S Grover, 2010

Doubt though, that White will win here just as easily.

lost in space: I have no clue if this ism still theory, but c5 is really interesting, e.g.

8...Bxe5 (not the best it seems) 9. dxe5 Nxe5 10. Qd6 Qe7 11. Bg5 Qxd6 12. cxd6 and even White is down a pawn his position is much much better

Domdaniel: 8.c5 was played in Minnebo-Ekstroem, Geneva, 1997 ... and drawn on move 16.

  lost in space: After 8. c5 Bb8 9. Bf4 Qe7 10. Nb5 0-0 11. Nd6 we would reach a nice complex position.

Ulhumbrus: If the move 3...e5 can be said to weaken the square d5 for Black, so can the move 8 c5 be said to weaken the square d5 for White. An alternative to 8 c5 is 8 f4.
