On 39...bxc6 40 Rxb8 Bxb8 White's d4 pawn is potentially vulnerable to attack from Black's Bishop, but I assume that this is not enough to enable Black to win, and that this is why Gelfand has agreed to s draw. |

The Capablanca Memorial in Cuba, which finished a couple of days ago, was pretty excit, and no doubt would have been a lot of fun to follow had there been a live feed. Ivanchuk and Le Quan Liem tied for first, and Ivanchuk's last round win over Le was enjoyable and instructive. Ivanchuk is also a better chess player than either of these guys, though unfortunately he lacks their psychological discipline and stability, or perhaps their pragmatism. |

Na4 (heading for d3) was actually the best option - otherwise it's hard to stop Black's counterplay. After that instead of the bishop going via f5 to h3 (or g4), it's better to go via f1.
