May-24-11  Chris00nj: I think White just regained the initative.

35... Ra8 may have given him more play. Also Nf8-e6 was a possibility instead of 34... axb5

haydn20: If Black swaps these N's his problms are over I'd think.
May-24-11  libertyjack: Draw agreed.
May-24-11  uscfratingmybyear: <Domdaniel> CLANG, CLANG, CLANG! Line of the day on Dylan's 70th.
May-24-11  Chris00nj: For what it's worth, Pocket Fritz 4 gives the position a 0.00
May-24-11  Chesschatology: All roads lead to Rome, and by Rome I mean "a draw". Annoying- Grischuk overlooked a simple tactic in a very strong position- he was lucky it didn't turn out worse for him.

And in the meantime they play a christmas song in Kazan ;)

lost in space: Yeah, draw agreed; but I can live with draws if they are not grandmasterdraws or draws agreed with a lot of play remaining on the board (like the 2 last games)

This here was a fine and nice game.

Domdaniel: Did Gelfand defend coolly and then take his chance to break out, or did Grischuk fluff it? His 18.Na4 doesn't look like a great idea, and then he missed 22.Bg4? e5!

Domdaniel: In fact, Nigel Short used to call Gelfand 'Bob'. Some people just have Bobness.

Ulhumbrus: Back again, with a mug of tea. It seems that Grischuk did not in fact manage to do much with his Knights. On 39...bxc6 40 Rxb8 Bxb8 White's d4 pawn is potentially vulnerable to attack from Black's Bishop, but I assume that this is not enough to enable Black to win, and that this is why Gelfand has agreed to s draw.

White spent so much time preventing black's plan that he didn't do anything active himself until after trades had reduced the position to a draw.

a) Tiebreaks, or b) when you start following other chess events. The Capablanca Memorial in Cuba, which finished a couple of days ago, was pretty excit, and no doubt would have been a lot of fun to follow had there been a live feed. Ivanchuk and Le Quan Liem tied for first, and Ivanchuk's last round win over Le was enjoyable and instructive. Ivanchuk is also a better chess player than either of these guys, though unfortunately he lacks their psychological discipline and stability, or perhaps their pragmatism.

May-24-11  AVRO38: I like this game. It's a clear demonstration of classical chess.

In his video later in the day Sergey Shipov thought 18. Na4 (heading for d3) was actually the best option - otherwise it's hard to stop Black's counterplay. After that instead of the bishop going via f5 to h3 (or g4), it's better to go via f1.

My final version of Shipov's commentary is here:

May-24-11  Penguincw: At least it was a more interesting battle than the previous two games.
