Jul-20-12  Nightsurfer: Black puts a classic plan on the board - namely defending Black Pawn e5 against White Nf3 with Bd6, please have a look at the diagram ...

... after the standard moves <1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Bd6>.

Many amateur players resort to <3. ... Bd6> after <1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 ...> in the Ruy Lopez - regardless the fact that they have not moved Black Pawn d7 yet, thus getting Black Bishop c8 stuck deep in Black camp, at least for the near future.

That popular <Bd6>-plan can be watched even today on the level of international tournaments, please have a look at at recent example: A Tari vs H L Edvardsson, 2009.

The notorious move <Bf8-d6> has even been tried out in <Bird's Defense> in the Ruy Lopez, please have a look at the corresponding stem game R Gralla vs G Bluschis, 2012 and have a look at the position after <6. ... Bd6?!?>, herewith the diagram ...

MissScarlett: Sidney Paine Johnston in his column in the <Chicago Sunday Tribune> of February 2nd 1902, p.20, promoted the 3...Bd6 line in the Ruy Lopez:

<C. W. Phillips, the correspondence champion, and the writer have been experimenting with the following move, the former having discovered the unusual strength of this defense [...]

The "Phillips defense" must be handled with infinite patience and accuracy. Its chief fault probably is that it gives black too few attacking chances and consequently is likely to be productive of drawn gamees. At any rate it is worthy of closer attention than it has as yet received. It is certainly superior to the [3...Nd4, Nge7, g6, and d6] defenses.>

It's tempting to think that Taylor, from Chicago, was inspired by this piece, directly or otherwise, but after 4.0-0 (or Nc3), Johnston was advocating the patient and accurate ...Nge7, not ...Nd4.
