Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-23-11  m7lb7: I think the immediate 9.Rd1, or even 9.h3, is better for white here than 9.d4 ...Bg4 10.Rd1. With the black bishop on g4 I don't think d4 is as strong for white because of the g4-d1 pin. Hence 9.h3 followed by 10.d4 or even 9.Rd1 Bg4 10.h3 Bh5 11.d3! And then you play Knight d2-f1-g3 (or e3).

Any thoughts?

Richard Taylor: My computer prefers 9.d4 (but see below) but your point is generally right. But White acts quickly to get d4 in and seems to have an advantage but its difficult. It is easier to play 9. h3 or even 9. Rd1

Also Black can gain an advantage not with 10. ... Qc8 but 10. ... d5! It gives Black best play. I think.

But OTB 9. d4 might be as good. 9 dh3 and then d3 is slower but easier to play but there are traps for both sides there also...

Richard Taylor: No it seems that 9. d4 is o.k. with careful play and 10...d5 is just another line not much better than Qc8 or not hugely better.
