 | | extremepleasure2: This game after Nd5 has become too abstract for me. What is black's plan? I don't like this move at all. White lost two tempi in the opening by fianchettoing his king's bishop after playing e4 and retreating his knight to c3 after black played Nf6. IMO black shouldn't have lost time with such a move like Nd5 and try to get the initiative on the queenside by playing Rb5 b5 b4 etc and force white to lose more time to prevent this plan instead of continuing his development. |

 | | moronovich: <Strongest Force: Perhaps Carlsen's subconscious tells him he needs something easy on the mind> May be.It is more than likely that Carlsen at least knows someone who knew/knows someone... |

 | | target4Q2011: i don't like this ... giving Carlsen open lines and diagonals ... tsk tsk tsk |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: Perhaps the idea was this. On 9 Qe2 Black can play b6 followed by ...Ba6. Then Qd2 loses a tempo which Carlsen saves by moving the Q to d2 at once whereupon Pelletier plays 10...c5 instead of 10...b6 |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: One justification for opening lines by 10...c5 is that White has obstructed his own development by 10 Qd2. |
Jul-25-11
 | | extremepleasure2: Black has just justified Carlsen's idea of fianchettoing his bishop at the cost of losing a tempo in the opening by playing c5 and cd4. Now white's position is much better |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: Black threatens 13...e5 14 Ndb5 Qxd2 removing the White Queen which defends the c2 pawn |
Jul-25-11
 | | target4Q2011: now, probably 13.a3 Nd5 14.Nxd5 Nxd5 15.c4 Nf6 16.b3 followed by Bb2 and White's development is completed with both Bishops on long diagonals ... |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: On 13...e5 14 axb4 ( 14 Nd4-b5 Qxd2 15 Bxd2 Nxc2) 14...cxd4 and White's N on c3 has to lose time on moving again. However 14 Ne4 threatens Nc5 and White seems to have the advantage eg 14...Be6 15 Nc5 Bd5 16 Nxb7 winning a pawn |
Jul-25-11
 | | target4Q2011: 15.Nb5 Bf6 16.Rd1 |
Jul-25-11
 | | target4Q2011: one variation is 15.Nb5 Nc4 16.Qxd4 Qxd4 17.Nxd4 Bxb4 17.c3 |
Jul-25-11
 | | Gypsy: Whatever is/was Yanick's prepared 'excuse from troubles', when he played the 13...e5, I don't see it. |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: Pelletier's d4 pawn, b7 pawn and a7 pawn are all attacked and he still has to develop his Queen's Bishop. |

 | | talisman: good morning... xa7. |
Jul-25-11
 | | Strongest Force: Rxa7 does not look good |
| Jul-25-11 | | Marmot PFL: Rxa7 Rxa7 Nxa7 Bf5 then Qc7, Rc8 is not bad for black. Good play for the pawn. I don't see anything wrong with the e5 plan, better than passive defense. |
Jul-25-11
 | | watwinc: How about Nxa7 followed by Ra3 for white? |
| Jul-25-11 | | Marmot PFL: 16...Re8 guards d4, nxd4? Bxd4 Qxd4 Qxd4 Rxd4 Re1+ Bf1 Bh3 |
Jul-25-11
 | | watwinc: Duh, Nc4 for black |
Jul-25-11
 | | target4Q2011: if 16 Rd1 Re8, of course not 17.Nxd4?? |
Jul-25-11
 | | Gypsy: <Marmot PFL: Rxa7 Rxa7 Nxa7 Bf5 then Qc7, Rc8 is not bad for black. ...> The a7 pawn is, for now, poisoned. But holding the d4 and a7 pawn into future looks difficult for Black. |
Jul-25-11
 | | talisman: thanks guys...now d4 is looking doomed huh? |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: One way for White to lose is 16 Rd1 Re8 17 Nxd4 Bxd4 18 Qxd4 Qxd4 19 Rxd4 Re1+ 20 Bf1 Bh3. I forecast confidently that Carlsen's play will either alter this sequence or else avoid it. |
Jul-25-11
 | | Ulhumbrus: My forecast was wrong. It was Pelletier's play which altered it. A moral to bear in mind for future reference is that it is the player who wins at the end of a variation who may happen to avoid it. |
Jul-25-11
 | | target4Q2011: 18.Qf2 is probably the best here |
