Jul-30-11  MarkThornton: 11...d4!? is risky but may be playable. 13.f5! is a good move. 13...Qxf6 may be Black's best reply, and 13.....Qd5 14. Nf4 Qd4+ must also be better than 13...cxb2?!.

16...Qh4? was a blunder, though the refutation is not easy to spot, and Black was already in a difficult position.

perfidious: White had already demonstrated his tactical abilities in this first-round upset (J Adair vs R Palliser, 2011), so his finding 17.f6 isn't at all surprising.

Aug-03-11  howlwolf: Perfidious, Thanks for your referal to Adair vs Palliser; that game was a real gem.
Aug-15-11  nutflush: Hmmm - not my finest hour and apparently Palliser has put the game in this month's ChessPub update .... was making this up from 7.d3 onwards. d4 pawn sac is fine - but you have to find Qxf6 with the idea of taking on b2... The Black queen gets trapped but White probably has to take a perpetual on the queen... not enough preparation!!
