Aug-31-11  yoozum: Simply awesome.
Aug-31-11  raul555: Moro showing no mercy
Aug-31-11  Gypsy: The unsaid part would be <31.Qxc2 Qxd5+ 32.Kb1 Qb4+ ... 0-1>, I think.

After <14.Ne4>, the knight is poisoned, of course: <14...dxe4? 15.Qxe4 g6 16.Qxc6...>

Aug-31-11  Gilmoy: <12..b5> morphs a French into a Sicilian!?

HeMateMe: Nice finish. The French is a bit of a limp weanie, but Moro manages to find tactical opportunities in any opening.
Sep-01-11  chillowack: The French is anything but a "limp weanie" (whatever that is). It's a very tough, solid defense with surprising resources.

I do agree, though, that somehow Moro played it like a Sicilian.

Sep-01-11  whiteshark: Fier said afterwards that taking the pawn on b4 was dubious.
Sep-01-11  Beautiful.LMS: The French isn't that bad, <HeHateMe>.

I think Fier shouldn't have grabbed the b pawn, because I don't like the attack Black gets after that.

HeMateMe: White should usually draw against the French, if he/she wants to. People lose because they press their spatial advantage too hard, and go wrong.

Maybe the Tarrasch French, but otherwise it seems you are not familiar with the potential of the French Winawer, Classic or Advanced variations. Moskalenko's books are a good place to start, or Moro's games themselves.

Sep-02-11  TheFocus: I specialized in the French for many years, both as a Class player, then into master level.

In Class tournaments, it is an excellent weapon, which many Class players are never as booked up on it, as they usually expect the Sicilian.

I have seen players stare at that e-pawn for minutes before making a move.

I have LOTS of wins with the French and very few losses.

Sep-03-11  SimonWebbsTiger: the funny thing is Moro once said people who play the French must have had bad childhoods.

And when it comes to books, John Watson's <Play the French> was the French Defence Bible for many years. I have had similar successes as <the Focus> in this wonderful counter attacking opening.

Sep-05-11  TheFocus: I still have my Watson!
