Feb-19-14 | | MarkFinan: Wow, this guy's in trouble by move 6. I've never come across this opening in any game I've ever played against my engine, it looked to be like a benoni!? I would have still known to have played 5...axb as opposed to the awful, yet quite natural looking 5...e6?? Natural because you want to develop your pieces but awful because black didn't play axb first. Nice little game by Mr Freeman though. I bet he knows all these little opening traps by looking through one of my game collections, lol 😃 |

Dec-10-14 | | bulibug: Wow!!! |
|
Dec-10-14 | | pedro99: I've never seen the Benko so comprehensibly demolished. As MarkFinan notes, you have to know your move orders with this opening. |
|
Dec-10-14 | | morfishine: Benko would be baffled by this game |

 | | Richard Taylor: I was toying with essaying a Benko as a back up in the coming NZ Open Champs. This game gives me pause! Nice game by White for sure. A crazy hatchet job! |

 | | Richard Taylor: P Van der Sterren vs Adams, 1992 Here's a better way of handling it for Black. The 'normal' procedure of castling and Bg7 runs into a central push it seems whereas taking on b5 and possibly taking the f1 B if e4 Another game (a well fought draw):
S Williams vs T Chapman, 2011
The Benko is still a good "surprise?" weapon. But it is relatively risky, although more straightforward in some ways cf the Benoni... |

 | | Richard Taylor: 14...Kf8 might have been an improvement for Black. But he was clearly under pressure... |

 | | Richard Taylor: Here's how Pogonina handled it. Her picture shows how she would disarm most male players (cunningly, she lies sexily on the chess board during her game, which is allowed due to new laws introduced to facilitate the popularization of chess among young men): but perhaps her method might not work against all women... E Hasanova vs N Pogonina, 2005 |
|
Dec-10-14 | | morfishine: I liked this pun even though it spirals into the abyss, miserably failing the pronounciation test: 'Legein' is of French origin and is pronounced 'Lu zhan', not even close to legion A pity, the double-meaning of 'stuff' is shrewd and effective and the pun itself somehow deserves a better fate ***** |

Dec-10-14 | | Smileshire: and besides shes your type, not mine. and shes also very vain, obviously, like you. i dont "connect" with her, she does nothing for me. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <morf: 'Legein' is of French origin and is pronounced 'Lu zhan', not even close to legion> You failed the interpretation test, as the pun is meant to be a take on the phrase "the Stuff of legend". http://www.english-test.net/forum/f...
In all seriousness, I thought you'd like this one, as it does in fact have something to do with what happened on the board. |
|
Dec-10-14 | | TheTamale: This game meets with my approval. I don't like the Benko and don't understand its popularity. Nothing personal against Pal Benko--I just don't see how what it offers is worth a pawn. |
|
Dec-10-14 | | kevin86: The pawn is the soul of chess- white moved pawns so much...and proved it. |

 | | Domdaniel: <TheTamale> You possibly have to try playing the Benko to see properly where Black's compensation comes from. It is regarded as one of the soundest and safest of all gambits, but Black's comp is largely positional. But obviously Black goes badly wrong here (and Daniel takes full advantage). <Pulo y Gata> Heh. Zakshina Legeina? |

Dec-10-14 | | morfishine: <OhioChessfan> You are right, I don't know what I was thinking with
'Stuff of Legion' when the correct cliche is 'Stuff of Legend'. But it is an excellent pun with the two-way connotation of "stuff" as I mentioned. In any case, I still can't come to terms with the pronounciation of 'Legein' even after listening to a female and male frenchperson pronounce it. I've had some French and worked in a French restaurant, so know some. They got it sounding like 'Luzon' (Phillipines)...No matter, its a fine pun, I goofed again ***** |
|
Dec-11-14 | | TheTamale: <Domdaniel: "Black's comp is largely positional."> This would explain why it goes over my head! Nor do I possess the discernment to see why it is thematically different than the seemingly similar Blumfeld Counter Gambit. For that matter, I'm not as good at math as I'd like to be, either. |

Pogonina is always, like most fairly attractive women, showing herself off in pictures so that is well known...she is also of course a very good chess player. But women in general like to be appreciated for their "talents" shall we say... So, foolish I may be, and may sound, but thus it is... I haven't seen pictures of any of the GMs lying in bathing costumes on chess tables and looking dashing and manly. If I do I'll send one for you... |
