Ulhumbrus: <beenthere240: The fork isn't threatened yet, since moving the f8 rook to d8 pins the knight.> Nxb6 not only takes a Rook but attacks the N on c8 as well

Ulhumbrus: <Honza Cervenka: <Ulhumbrus: Black has to move one of the Rooks in order to answer the threatened fork Nd7 and 31...Re8 will have taken the Rook away from the f file in the event that Black wants to open the file by ...f5> I don't think that f6-f5 with improving white's Pawn structure and weakening of Pe5 would be optimal plan for black. Black can just sit and wait for white's leave of d-file to get some counter-play. And white must do it if he wants to make any progress in the position.> If White wins the b4 pawn, he will threaten to advance his b5 pawn. Black will need to create threats of his own in time

  beenthere240: Is this winnable?
Sep-27-11  Gordon1306: Fast forward . . . . Draw?
Sep-27-11  Gordon1306: Fast forward Naka vs Anand - Naka needs to take the draw!

haydn20: I thought 43...h4 was better than g6 tho' it probably doesn't matter.

beenthere240: Magnus could get mated if he don't watch out! -- although he can always give up the a7 pawn to get the rook back to the back rank.

Ulhumbrus: Carlsen's passed pawn seems almost useless while Black's occupation of the second rank doesn't. Black can march his King right down, almost as if White has no passed pawn

SteinitzLives: Black may be able to set up a fortress and try to find ways to threaten whites' doubled pawns. I though Carlsen would win this endgame, but right now not so sure, but if he can use his R to weaken blacks Ps he can probably bring home the point.

haydn20: White can retake his 2nd rank any time by sacking the aP, but can he do it with advantage? Doubt it.
Sep-27-11  ajile: Seems a bit strange for White to trap his own king on the first rank. 44.Kg3 seemed better.

moronovich: Hmm..Anand tends to say it is a draw and Naiditch believes white is winning !? which means there should be a lot of play in the position.

Meatwad: Can anybody propose an advantageous setup for White? I'm looking hard here but can't see what Magnus is aiming for (not unusual).

beenthere240: As everyone knows, the trick is to be able to go to the 8th rank with check. But I dont see how this is possible here, even if Aronian were to cooperate.

JohnBoy: <Meatwad>: White is almost surely going to try moving the king to b1, then up the b-file to eliminate the black rook. Thus he needs to make sure that the black king can't help a pawn through once the white king is so far away from the king-side pawns.

Anatoly21: I really thought Magnus had a won endgame here. But after 43.Kh2?! and 45.Rh7?!, I just cannot see it anymore. Every time I try a new White idea, Black has just enough resources to stay it. I think Anand was right: Black will draw.
Sep-27-11  ajile: White threw away the easy win with 44.Kg1.

  Anatoly21: Correction: "stay in it."
Sep-27-11  uscfratingmybyear: Looks to me that both sides have issues, black's rook is perfect where it is but can't move without letting the king or pawn loose, black's king is active and ready to invade if the white king hightails it for the Qside so I'd call it even.

Anatoly21: 52...g5 and the game should draw.
