  haydn20: <Tamar> agree. It's trickier now as W pushes hP & checks.
Sep-28-11  ajile: Yes 47..c5 was a bit of an overreaction. Black lost almost a full point in advantage after this move.

  Marmot PFL: If there is a way to pull it out Anand will probably find it. As for Carlsen it wouldn't be the first time he lost early and came back to win.

  tamar: The reason I don't like ...c5 is that it is harder to find a safe haven for the King now.

Hard to believe Anand won't find a drawing sequence somewhere before the a pawn hits bottom.

Sep-28-11  ajile: The other bad thing about ..c5 is now Black can't get connected passers on the q-side. Leaving the pawn on c6 means he could have played ..b5 later.
Sep-28-11  MyCatPlaysChess: Is the position after black sacrafices his bishop for white's c pawn (gaining three connected passed pawns) winning for black? The idea being to simply exchange queens and march the pawns?

  boz: Excellent. I just drove home from work and only missed a few moves. When are they going to make chess available on the radio?

  scormus: <MCPC> good question. I was asking myself the same, but getting the Q's off stumps me at the moment

Looking at it now. Black appears to still have a very slight advantage after 47..Bxc4.

Sample line:

1. = (-0.06): 48.Qf4+ Ke7 49.Nxc4 Qxf4+ 50.Kxf4 b5 51.Ne3 Kf6 52.Ke4

Sep-28-11  theodor: <<tamar>: <theodor> thanks> astonishing! a rook cant stop two pawns on the 6th, but knight can stop three of them!

Analysis by Rybka 3 32-bit : 22 ply

2. = (0.17): 51...Kd6 52.Ke4 c5 53.h4 Ke6 54.Nc2 b4 55.Kd3 Kf5 56.Kc4 Kg4 57.Kb5 Kxh4 58.Kxa4 Kg3 59.Kb3 Kf2 60.Kc4 Kg2 61.Na1 Kf3 62.Nb3 Kf4 63.Nxc5 Ke3 64.Nb3

Sep-28-11  Ragh: As soon as both the minor pieces are off the board, the black king cannot escape from a spite of checks from white queen. A draw no matter what the engine evals say.

  boz: If Anand survives this, it will be two close calls in a row. A tough man to beat.

  tamar: <Ragh> I agree. Chucky went for 49...Bb3, at least keeping minors on.
Sep-28-11  ajile: The king might be able to hide on a7 but he has to get there first.

  haydn20: Was 49. Qe6 better?

  tamar: <ajile> We might see the King on a7 now that Anand chose 50 Qe4

The point Anand might have missed is that 50...a3 is on.

  tamar: I guess 50...a3 was an engine move, as both players did not see it.

50...a3 51 Qxb7+ Ke6 52 Qxb3 Qd2+ instead of taking the knight.

Sep-28-11  ajile: White is correctly trying to confuse the issue but Black has nothing to fear from any discovered checks.

50..a3 is simply winning.
