Domdaniel: It looks like a classic Nimzowitsch position for Black. I reckon Carlsen can win.

Ulhumbrus: On 43...b3 42 axb3 Kxb3 White's Rook seems forced to allow Black's Rook to invade the second rank. However this breakthrough may be better with Black's Rook on a6 instead of on d6. The reason is that the check ...Ra2+ keeps the square d2 free for the bishop so that Rc1 can be answered by the fork ...Bd2 attacking the Rook on c1 and the e3 pawn.

whiteshark: I don't see that playing against <two weaknesses> works successfully. here

  Ulhumbrus: On 44..b3 45 axb3 Kxb3 46 Rc1 Ra2+ 47 Kf1 Bd2 forks the R on c1 and the e3 pawn

moronovich: Seems that Magnus missed Rd6 combined with Kb5,a4,a3 with decent winning chances

Ulhumbrus: Does Carlsen consider the breakthrough ...b3 too risky? Perhaps he thinks that Ivanchuk's Rook will invade his own position if he tries it, eg Rc8 in reply to ...Bd2

  whiteshark: < moronovich> if <...Kb5> then <Nd5> forces Black's <K> to come back to <c4>.

  joe1137: 45. ... Ra1

Domdaniel: ...b3 would be crazy: he has the White Rook penned in and can penetrate with Rook or King. No sense in relaxing the queenside hold.

  Ulhumbrus: Black threatens 46...b3 47 axb3 Kxb3 trapping White's Rook

moronovich: <whiteshark: < moronovich> if <...Kb5> then <Nd5> forces Black's <K> to come back to <c4>.>Right.And that was the mainidea behind RD6: to prevent nasty knightmoves in the d-file.

Marmot PFL: best try to win seemed Kb5-a4-a3 and Bb2 winning a2, but black must have decided it wouldn't work

Domdaniel: Now, though, ...b3 is on the cards.

Marmot PFL: b3 is threatened, if Kf2 for escape sq (e2) then Ra1 and is white in zugzwang? if N moves Kd3

SCUBA diver: I bet Chucky wishes he would have taken the g pawn on move 33 instead of moving the King.

  talisman: <Dom> b3 wins...?

Domdaniel: <talisman> ...b3 wins the Exchange, but the ending could still need work. ...Rb1 is another idea, or ...Re1+ then ...Rb1.

Marmot PFL: If b3 ab Kxb3 Rxc3+ Kxc3 and Ivanchuk has to draw ending with pawn for exchange. Maybe Ng6-e5xg4 he can do that.

Ulhumbrus: Ivanchuk has found an ingenious resource: 46...b3 47 Ne5+! taking advantage of the temporary pin on Black's bishop. On 47...Kb4 48 Nc6+! continues to check the King

Ulhumbrus: Perhaps this does not quite work: 46...b3 47 Ne5+ Kb4 48 Nc6+ Ka4! 49 Rxc3 bxa2 and the pawn threatens to queen. This warrants examining further.

  Stonehenge: <Ulhumbrus> I guess 46...b3 47 Ne5+ Kb4 48 axb3 is a draw?

moronovich: when or after Carlsen wins the exchange the question is if Chucky can built a fortress(one that holds)...

  haydn20: 46...b3 47. Ne5+ Kd5! 48. Rxc3 bxa2 wins, no?

Marmot PFL: your line take on b3, take on c3, take on g4, then nf2, isn't that draw?
