al wazir: What was Short thinking when he played 37...f5? Or when he played 55...Nd5 instead of 55...Nc6 ?

When he played 55....Nd5, he was probably thinking he didn't like the look of 55......Nc6 56. Nf6+ Kf8 57. Rf7#

Dec-05-11  knighterrant999: After this game Short was heard to ask, "Can I play Becker again?"
Dec-05-11  mack: Poor form not playing 60.d8=R#

kdogphs: Okay... so this is one of the first GM games I've seen (if not the FIRST) where someone has been checkmated by promoting a pawn... one of my students did it last year and it was brilliantly done. Short really hasn't much business being in this tournament, he's playing so listlessly it's almost sad.
Dec-05-11  Penguincw: Hmm. Not very common to not resign before an obvious checkmate.

Now that you mention it, I don't like the look of it either.

HeMateMe: Maybe Nigel needs to call it a day, if he isn't going to play in top flight tournaments on a regular basis. You have to stay sharp, active, to play at this level. I think he is being hurt by just playing one or two tournaments throughout the year, then playing a lot of very strong players here, one after the other. It shows in the quality of the games, and letting the other guy get a mate, as though Short is Karpov on a retirement tour, doesn't seem to wash.
Dec-06-11  siggemannen: Actually i can recall at least one other Short game where he allowed mate, so it's probably more of a character trait then lack of form or whatnot.
