Phony Benoni: <ajile> <12.Nxe5> looks messy, and doesn't seem to gain anything for White: click for larger viewA familiar queen trap arises after 12...Nxe5 13.Qxh5?? Bg4. However, White would probably realize that, or at least that his c4 is hanging, and recapture on e5 instead. After 13.dxe5 Qxe5 material equality is restored. This line might be better for Black: <12.Nxe5 dxe5 13.Qxh5 exd4> click for larger viewNow White cannot play the natural 14.Ne2 due to 14...Ne5 attacking the bishop followed by 15...Bg4 trapping the queen again. The knight would have to go to a2, b1 or d1 to allow the bishop to retreat to e2 and save the queen for the moment, though Black would still have chances to trap her. Perhaps this isn't fatal for White, but he is certainly retreating while Black is activating his pieces. Not a pleasant state of affairs. |
