kellmano: <jacqueslaumone: Shirov goes for Hou's one weakness, e6.> Plus the pawn on g7 and the undefended knight on b8.

24. Qe5 has to be stopped and the knight already has the job of defending a6.

I'd rather be White.

jtd200: I guess if 23..Rf8, now, 24.Rb1, and white looks pretty good... right?

  King Sacrificer: <Armaggedon92: 23.c4 ???>

I thought the same thing. What i saw was 23...Qxc4 24. Qa5 Qc7 25. Qxc7 Kxc7 26. Rf7. White doesn't get anything with this line but surely i made a mistake here.

  Armaggedon92: Actually, I saw the line with 23. c4 as :
23. c4 23...Q*c4
24. Rc1 followed for instance by 25. Qa5+

benjinathan: jtd200:Yes- noticed it and delted my- but you were too quick!
Feb-01-12  s4life: Qb5 here looks pretty safe for black. If Hou can exchange one more piece, the ending is gonna be pretty favorable to her.

Bishoprick: d4 (attacking the bishop)looks interesting for Hou, with a plan of pushing both center passed pawns.

  jtd200: What's the answer to Qc4 here?
Feb-01-12  jacqueslaumone: <I guess if 23..Rf8, now, 24.Rb1, and white looks pretty good... right?>

Maybe 23. ... Rf8 24. Rb1 Ke7

benjinathan: <plang: Back rank mates are over-rated>

yes they are a cheap trick.

Feb-01-12  ChessMan94: Why exchange queens?! I thought Shirov was going to hold on to his queen.

  Bishoprick: Now why didn't I think of Q-b5? Because I'm a patzer?

technical draw: <plang: Back rank mates are over-rated>

No there're not. They are rated one point, just like any other mate.

Feb-01-12  ChessMan94: The stage is set for a windmill! But I doubt it will happen.

plang: White still has some pull here - both pieces more active

Domdaniel: Just a fairly normal ending where White has most of the winning chances. Rook on 7th, Bishop vs Knight, scattered and weak black pawns ... it's definitely winnable.

Domdaniel: Meanwhile, Sutovsky-Nabaty is a wild, wild ride where I can't see Black surviving long. And Kulaots went gonzo against Polgar, with a piece sac and lots of pawns flung forward. Looks dubious: Judit seems to have it under control.

  Hesam7: 23. Qe2 is hard to explain. Why not 23. Bg4 or 23. Qf4 ?

  Hesam7: It is also worth noting that Black avoided 12. ... g5 13. exf6 gxh4 14. Be2 ...
