plang: This is not so easy for Black
Feb-01-12  ChessMan94: A black pawn will fall soon.
Feb-01-12  goldenbear: Why is she taking so long? Nc6 must be the only chance, I think.
Feb-01-12  s4life: <Domdaniel: Just a fairly normal ending where White has most of the winning chances. Rook on 7th, Bishop vs Knight, scattered and weak black pawns ... it's definitely winnable.>

I think the ending is slightly harder to play for white. Black's king is in better position and white's pawns on the queen side are for the taking. White's rook has to thread with care.

Feb-01-12  ChessMan94: Leaving for lunch. I expect a White win or a draw when I come back.

Strongest Force: If black prepared for this it's time to get the books back out
Feb-01-12  master of defence: And now, 26. Rxg7 is the best for white here.
Feb-01-12  galdur: Looking pretty good for black. Probably draw though.
Feb-01-12  zealouspawn: Surely you mean its good for white but you expect a draw?
Feb-01-12  galdur: No, I like black here but I donīt think she has enough for a win.
Feb-01-12  the nakedape: 26. Bg6 to help defend the c pawn.

YouRang: <Galdur> I agree. Black has the passed pawns and a good N. Probably white will be on the defense initially, but should hold.
Feb-01-12  s4life: Shirov with 4 mins for 14 moves.. looks pretty bad.

Domdaniel: There's not much point in White taking the pawn on g7 -- it frees the black rook to grab the f-file, and it gains little - just a 2-1 pawn majority on the side where the bishop is less useful. White should go after the b-pawn, maybe with a move like c3 first.

Marmot PFL: White's pieces seem active enough to hold this. I doubt Shirov will have any problems, although I little short on time.

Domdaniel: There's no such thing as time trouble with increments. A grandmaster who can't find a good move in 30 seconds is acting under false pretences.
Feb-01-12  goldenbear: <There's no such thing as time trouble with increments. A grandmaster who can't find a good move in 30 seconds is acting under false pretences.> I disagree. If we want good moves, we will have to resurrect adjournments. Shirov might have won this game with an adjournment, but in today's trash chess, this could be good for Black.

Domdaniel: ...Nb4 is awkward for White. This is exactly why I thought c3 was better than Rxg7.
Feb-01-12  s4life: <Domdaniel: There's no such thing as time trouble with increments. A grandmaster who can't find a good move in 30 seconds is acting under false pretences.>

Grandmasters often don't find a good move in 30 secs.

Feb-01-12  galdur: Heh, white might implode on this after all. She seems very dangerous. I like how she reverted from that sicilian poisoned pawn into a favorable french type position.
Feb-01-12  s4life: <Domdaniel: ...Nb4 is awkward for White. This is exactly why I thought c3 was better than Rxg7.>

Are you sure? c3 more or less assures that black gets to keep the central connected pawns as the Knight has now time to defend the e6 pawn.

Feb-01-12  darshandatta: Don't want such an exciting game to end in time trouble...

tpstar: Shirov has long been an endgame wizard so he should pull out of time pressure OK.

If 28 ... Nxc2 29. Rxb5 Ne3 (mate threat) White will probably trade Rooks with 30. Rb8+ and then 32. Be2 with an interesting B vs N ending.

Feb-01-12  s4life: Well, Shirov is playing very 'human' right now.. he has no time left to see further methinks... Hou probably has at least a draw here.

Marmot PFL: I doubt either side ever had winning chances. This opening (like many mainline Sicilians) has been analyzed practically to death.
