Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-13-12  ajile: It would appear that the White lines with Bf4 are less effective when White fianchettos the light squared bishop. After ..Nh4 White can't maintain his dark squared bishop on the nice h2-b8 diagonal pressuring Black's d6 pawn. Bf4 seems to work better for White when he can play h3 so the bishop can drop back to h2.
Feb-13-12  ajile: So 3..g3 actually might be premature since it allows Black to transpose into favorable Benoni lines.
Feb-14-12  King Death: <ajile> You seem to be hot for the Bf4 lines against the Modern Benoni but it's a bit of a stretch to say that the fianchetto variation is "favorable" for Black.
Feb-14-12  ajile: lol

Yes I think it was after a game where Aronian won with White. White gets uncomfortable pressure against d6 with the bishop on the long diagonal and after rerouting a knight to c4 via e2. Note that White also usually plays a4 to secure the c4 square and stop ..b5 by Black.

As far as the "favorable" comment I say this because of all the recent games in the fianchetto line that Black has either drawn or outright won. It looks to me that White simply runs out of useful ideas to make progress in these lines.
