Aug-05-14 | | kevin86: After the rook sac and queen move, white threatens mate in two ways. Black has no escape. |
Aug-05-14 | | posoo: da importance of da TEMPO. |
Aug-05-14 | | rozzatu: @EIDorado: yes 24. Qh2 works well but not as well. But it is my choice too. |
Aug-05-14 | | dfcx: 24.Rh8+ Bxh8
25.Qh2 and mates soon. |
Aug-05-14 | | dfcx: @EIDorado: 24. Qh2 works, but it allows 24...f6. does not lead to immediate mate. |
Aug-05-14 | | Once: Fritzie gives the immediate 24. Qh2 a score of +5.7. One sample variation (not all forced) 24. Qh2 f6 25. Rh7 Nf5 26. gxf6
Bxf6 27. Ne5 Bxe5 28. Qxe5 Raf6 29. Rc7
click for larger viewWhite threatens 30. Rh8+ Kxh8 31. Qh2+. So Fritzie thinks that black has to give up his queen for the Rc7. So, yes, 24. Qh2 does seem to work. |
Aug-05-14 | | SuperPatzer77: 24. Qh2 is a little slow but loses some tempo. 24. Rh8+! gives White more much tempo. . SuperPatzer77 |
Aug-05-14
 | | gawain: 24 Rh8+ followed by 25 Qh2.
White's 23 Qg2 was a very crafty move, wasn't it? Allowing the Q, when needed, to slide over to the safe square h2. |
Sep-24-24 | | stacase: Ridiculously easy |
Sep-24-24
 | | Korora: Bye-bye birdie, and then it's mate in two. |
Sep-24-24
 | | takebackok: No think Tuesday, all forced 24. Rh8+ and no answer to Qh2. |
Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: I actually got this one. (Sunday's problem might have shook my confidence a little.) I have a new training program.
I also am analyzing on a board or a magnetic set, especially for the difficult ones. However, today I solved it in a matter of seconds, looking at it only from the diagram. I am also writing everything down in a spiral bound notebook. I had a streak of 40+ correct solutions ... but yesterday that was totally blown out of the water! |
Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: BTW ... I am 66. I am not really thinking about improvement - my main goal is not to slide too far back in terms of tactics and concentration and overall cognitive ability. |
Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: When I was 12 or 13, we had an elderly gentleman in our chess club. When I first started at the club, he could maybe have given me rook odds. But one year, he clearly declined, going from like 1600 or 1700 and lost hundreds of points. (He stopped playing not long after that.) Although I don't remember his name, I am hoping to stay active and avoid a similar fate. |

Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: BTW, my first try was Rh8+, followed by RxB+; but I quickly discarded that. |
Sep-24-24 | | saturn2: 24.Rxh8 Kxh8 25.Qh2 or immediately 24.Qh2 win. |
Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: My second mental stab was Rh8+!, followed by Qh3? (But then I realized that Black could swap Queens.) I have been doing a lot of "Puzzle Rush" on Chess-dot-com. The other night I got 37 in 3 minutes ... without any misfires ... which was my all-time best. |
Sep-24-24
 | | LIFE Master AJ: @Saturn2
24.Qh2?, ...f7-f5!; and I see no mate. |
Sep-24-24 | | mel gibson: That was too easy - LOL. |
Sep-24-24 | | TheaN: Black ignored the forcing moves and gets mated after <24.Rh8+ (Qh2?! f6 25.Rh7 +- but no mate) Bxh8 25.Qh2>: White threatens Qxh8# and Qh7# and moving the f-pawn now still allows the latter. What's left is <25....Qh3 26.Qxh3 Bxd4 27.Qh7#>. Pretty simple Tuesday. |
Sep-24-24
 | | chrisowen: Im brass its quilt pan guy its Rh8+ aoe its jet doh its axiom juggle its aog jig Rh8+ over :) |
Sep-24-24
 | | lil dw: Easy enough to find Rh8+, etc; but Black chose poorly with 23...b4. Engine gives 0.00 to 23...Rc6! Now if: 24.Rh8+ Bxh8, 25.Qh2 Rxc3+, 26.bxc3 Qxc3+ and perpetual check follows. 24.Qh2 goes along similar lines. |
Sep-24-24 | | Hercdon: Qh2 also works (as mentioned above), just not as flashy |
Sep-24-24 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: The king's line is: 24. Rh8+ Bxh8 25. Qh2... I posted so quickly that I didn't figure the Qc8...
LOL |
Sep-24-24 | | Rosbach: Rh8+ Bxh8 25. Qh2 wins |
