pawn to QB4: hi Mark - just under 14 hours from now.
Apr-21-12  MarkFinan: <pawn to Qb4> Thank you very much Sir.. I actually just noticed the time the game starts above actually, but i saw the game on the front page and it said/says "Live", so I just guessed it was about to start? Thanks for your answer anyway, much appreciated :)
Apr-21-12  JohnDahl: Just about to start in the early hours of the morning? Nobody can be this stupid!
Apr-21-12  SamAtoms1980: <JohnDahl> It's in Switzerland, brother... :-)
Apr-21-12  JohnDahl: Maybe they could spare Mark one of their watches.

I was very disappointed to see both Kramnik and Aronian donning casual attire for today's game. This is one of those rare subjects where Fischer, Kasparov and I are in total agreement: professional chess should be a game for gentlemen, not bums. Look at all the old chess photos - everyone in a suit, preferably three-piece, and tie. Can you imagine Lasker in a tracksuit?

Thanh Phan: <Look at all the old chess photos - everyone in a suit, preferably three-piece, and tie.> View any of the first generation of Photos, and note, All are in attire such as Suit and Tie, that was then, this is now, and yes I agree with your sediments toward classical attire in Official tournaments, it's just how the New Generation appears unjust toward your definition of Official Tournament Outfits that may grate against your views.
Apr-21-12  King Death: <Thanh Phan> It was the same way in bridge a few years back, see the picture about 2/3 of the way down the page: http://shenkinbridge.com/Entertainm...
Apr-21-12  JohnDahl: This sort of thing is just completely unacceptable: http://files.chesscomfiles.com/imag...
Apr-21-12  Blunderdome: It starts at 9 AM EST. On my screen this is displayed between the board and the Kibitzing.
Apr-22-12  HowDoesTheHorsieMove: If it would get Chucky to show up he could play naked for all I care.
Apr-22-12  positionalgenius: Hopefully 1.e4 c5! B56 sicilian just like old times and a Kramnik win.
Apr-22-12  ajile: The main page says LIVE CHESS.

But I'm here now and there ain't any.

Bummer.

HeMateMe: Lets hope Kramnik comes out with some fire, after such a limp endgame the other day.
Apr-22-12  ajile: <HeMateMe: Lets hope Kramnik comes out with some fire, after such a limp endgame the other day.>

He needs a bonerfide opening so he's hard to beat.

Apr-22-12  zluria: Frankly, the first game was a disappointment in terms of the level of chess played. Kramnik simply wasn't himself. It wasn't any one specific thing, but if you look at the sum total his play was way below par for him. He got an indifferent position out of the opening, made a transition into a slightly worse endgame, where he failed to put up much resistance, got into time trouble and blundered. Aronian played well, but he didn't really have to show anything special in order to win.

Here are some nice games they've played before:

Kramnik vs Aronian, 2008

Kramnik plays the anti-Moscow, sacs a bunch of pawns and a knight for a big middlegame attack and finally achieves a pawn up rook ending which he then converts confidently.

Kramnik vs Aronian, 2007

This one is a patient endgame grind by Aronian.

Apr-22-12  zluria: Looking over their games, it becomes evident that Kramnik tends to win the complex middlegames, like here:

Kramnik vs Aronian, 2007

Kramnik vs Aronian, 2010

While Aronian's wins are usually achieved in tricky endgames, sometimes as a result of a Kramnik blunder, like here:

Aronian vs Kramnik, 2010

Aronian vs Kramnik, 2011

It's interesting, because it is kind of the opposite of how the players are usually portrayed.

Apr-22-12  hugogomes: Two excellent players, a match. Aronian vs Kramnik will certainly be a match to remember, with Aronian capturing the win with black in the first game. Will Kramnik fight back? Will Aronian be able to get the second win? We'll wait to see, of course, but my stakes are 0-1 to Vlad in this game!
