 | | Natalia Pogonina: The main moves are 9..a6 and 9...Qa5. Both are sharp tactical continuations. Being greedy and trying to capture the rook is a bad idea: 9... xc3?! 10. d2 xa1? 11. xa1 0-0 12.dc and Black is totally lost. |

 | | talisman: mighty early to think if it's prep... a5 now? |

 | | Eyal: Thanks, <tpstar> (and <Stonehenge>). Looks like Gelfand is actually the one who's first to be surprised; he sank into deep thought after 9.d5. They're still following J Gustafsson vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2008. |

 | | rogge: OK, Go Anand, I guess :) |

 | | Natalia Pogonina: Gelfand is taking his time. The trick about playing the Gruenfeld is that there are LOTS of lines to memorize, and the move order is critical. Maybe he is trying to recall his analysis. Or was he surprised by Anand's rare 9.d5 move? |

 | | marwanredman123: Very very surprise !! |

 | | kdogphs: I was hoping for a King's Indian... Gelfand should've gone big in the first round, just my opinion. |

 | | talisman: a6?..... |
 |
| May-11-12 | | Sularus: thinking this long at move 9 can just be a psych ploy. but then gandalf knows anand knows that. psych wars! :) |

 | | Sneaky: Does it come down to 10...Bxc3+ or 10...a6 ? Or is there another tact? |

 | | brulla: Could Vishy be ready to sac his rook a1? To me the queen would look strong on a1 and I suppose gelfand avoids this... |
 |

 | | Ulhumbrus: On 9...Bxc3+ 10 Bd2 Bxd2+ 11 Qxd2 Qb6 12 Bc4 Nd8 13 0-0 White's attack may provide more than enough compensation for the pawn |

 | | Natalia Pogonina: Nowadays top GMs are often not trying to play for an objective advantage. All they want is to get a double-edged position which they know better than the opponent. For example, maybe you remember how Kramnik won recently against Aronian in the Four Knights - an opening widely considered to be drawish. Objectively speaking, Black is doing fine here, but precise play is called for. |

 | | chessgames.com: Greetings fellow chess fans!
Yes, we were a move or two behind the official feed, but I believe we're fully caught up now. Our apologies for that while we work out the inevitable first-round technical details. Also, please note that there is now an excellent video coverage currently featuring Nigel Short. Whenever there is good video coverage we'll make sure to have link to the right of the diagram "Live video feed" - http://moscow2012.fide.com/en/ |
