He could have - but then after 23. Rxc8 Bxc8 the bishop goes anyway to c8, relinquishing defense of d5 and e4, and this time he has no rook for counterplay. |

 |
| May-21-12 | | villageboy: Do not under estimate Anand. He would just bounce back with white on 8th and win another game later. |
 |
| May-21-12 | | lostgalaxy: At least for Anand it was a beautiful loss. |

 | | Domdaniel: <HeMateMe> -- <Does he have a history of playing certain things, when he really needs a full point?> If Anand *did* have a win-at-all-costs repertoire, it would be useless to him, as Gelfand would be well prepared for it. What he needs now is novelties -- good and original ones, if possible. He also needs to increase his energy level, if he can -- his play so far has been oddly listless and bland. Maybe there's something in Natalia's suggestion that he's not feeling well, or maybe the world championship has become a burden that subconsciously he wants to be free of. Then again, maybe he just needed to lose one in order to unleash his superpowers. And maybe, now that he has something to lose, Gelfand will get nervous. It's all to play for. |

 | | Eyal: <Dom> <What he needs now is novelties -- good and original ones, if possible.> Yeah - especially since we've been hearing for years now, every time Anand has a disappointing tournament result, that it's because he is "hiding his preparation"... Actually, Anand's preparation/novelties turned out so far to be effective mainly in his games with Black, in neutralizing Gelfand's play - as with 14...Nf6 on game 2 and 14...0-0 on game 6. But it didn't work, of course, in game 7. In Anand's games with White, Gelfand seemed so far able to constantly surprise him. Another approach may be to go for something which is decidedly not major and not forcing, like Kasparov did in the final game of the 1987 match -in order to "just play chess", as they say. But you have to be in the right state of mind for this. In the 2000 match against Kramnik, for example, the same(?) Kasparov seemed to become paralyzed every time he didn't manage to get a clear opening advantage with White. |

| May-21-12 | | serenpidity.ejd: 17)....-<BF4> is better if not best.
If 18) Bxf4 then Qxf4 harassing the kingside with a possible19)... g5.
It is hard to drive the black queen on f4 with 19) g3 because it will weaken the white squares. |

| May-21-12 | | frogbert: <In Anand's games with White, Gelfand seemed so far able to constantly surprise him.> and he did so today (game 8) too, i think - but apparently to anand's advantage eventually. |

 |
May-21-12
 | | lost in space: <DomD>, it is comparable with football: As long we have 0:0 a kind of Catenaccio is played (like the Blues celebrated it this week); This changes only if the Carnaccio-playing team (player) gets a goal (1:0 in the 83rd minute or so). After wards he/the team is starting to PLAY and not only destroys the play. We have now the 1:1 in the 88. minute and well see the Catanaccio again. And this because the match is limited to 12 games and Anand keeps his title in case the match ends 6:6 |

 | | Reisswolf: Even on "general principles" alone, why wouldn't Black have played 37...exf2, also threatening to queen, but at least on a square that cannot be protected by one of the knights? (Yes, I know that the threat of mate renders the question moot.) |
 |
| Jun-01-12 | | abslinux: What about this guys??
38. Nxe6 Rh1+
39. Kxh1 e1
This will bring black queen back in the game.
Also black can kill knight in e5 using new queen and then there will be no threat to black king.
What u say??? |

If 38... h1+
39. xh1 e1 +
40. h2
Now what? e5 knight is protected by d4 pawn. Black can't avoid mate now. There follows: 40... xd4 41. g6+ g8 42. g7# If 40... g8 41. g7+ h8 42. g6# |

It's just that after almost ten days of not having had any problems to solve, even after the smallest problem I was not able to adjust to the new frame of mind where you sit down and in a disciplined way you simply deal with it.> (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSOw...) |
