Sep-08-20  optimal play: 4...f6 was a novelty

13...bxc3?

14...cxb2?

Black’s greedy pawn-grabbing brings about his downfall.

16.Bxa6!

Now it’s payback time.

17.Bb5!

FSR: The Ponziani isn't any great shakes. It's hard to get utterly destroyed by it, as my namesake was here. See also Chigorin vs Gossip, 1889 ; D Sprenkle vs A C Chow, 1982.

The American revolution will not be celebrated on my watch.

It's been 246 years. You sure hold a grudge.

Dionysius1: <FSR> Australia's independence day was way back in January anyway. :-)
Jul-04-22  optimal play: Congrats to Graham on the pun "My Sweet Lord".

If I had to characterize Hodgson's play in this game I would say "He's so fine".

Jul-04-22  goodevans: <optimal play> Superb!
Jul-04-22  Autoreparaturwerkbau: <optimal play: 16.♗xa6! Now it’s payback time.>

Certainly it is. Though, to be honest, had black played 16...♘c5, he could offer much more resistance. Knight on ♘c5 singlehandedly guards queenside and allows time for black to develop kingside somewhat. Actually played move 16...♘d8? allows invading queenside for free and also prevents black to regroup the kinside - basically game over already after 16 moves.

OhioChessFan: I don't find it cute or funny or endearing not to have a July 4th pun.
