 | | Phony Benoni: Where did that pun come from? It's familiar, but I don't think it was ever used in a movie. Oh, wait, I know! This is the third game the pun was used for, the other instances being
H Bogart vs NN, 1933 (Oct-12-06) and
Reshevsky vs Capablanca, 1935 (Mar-24-12). So first a Bogart game, then a Reshevsky game, then one game with both of them. That should about do it. |

 | | Infohunter: <Phony Benoni: Where did that pun come from? It's familiar, but I don't think it was ever used in a movie.> It is commonly but inaccurately thought of as having been said by Bogart's character in the 1942 movie _Casablanca_ to Sam the piano player (portrayed by Dooley Wilson). In truth, Ingrid Bergman's character first said, "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake; play 'As Time Goes By'." Later on Bogart said, "You played it for her, you can play it for me. ... If she can stand to listen to it, _I_ can. Play it." In 1972 Woody Allen made a movie entitled "Play It Again Sam", thus helping to perpetuate this misquote. Still, I can appreciate how well the pun fits here, be it a misquote or not. |

| May-24-12 | | rilkefan: This is a really good game by Bogart, considering. |

The pun?
Quite sporting of Sammy, I thought, not to play 6 Nxf7. Bogey played a decent game here |

| May-24-12 | | RookFile: Young folk may not know that black was one of Hollywood's greatest actors, starring in movies like "Casablanca" and "The African Queen". |
 |
| May-24-12 | | thegoldenband: <scormus: Quite sporting of Sammy, I thought, not to play 6 Nxf7.> Actually, 6. d4 is allegedly the best move, though 6. Nxf7 is more overtly sexy (so to speak). |
 |
| May-24-12 | | Jason Frost: <vinidivici: sorry for asking but why this is a game of the day? Whats the specialty of this game?> More than anything, because Humphrey Bogart was playing black ... which makes it worthy in my eyes. As for the pun, it is obviously referring to the fact that Reshevsky could've won the game. In the final position, I think there was almost no chance Bogart could've held a draw, but a timely and very classy draw offer by Reshevsky got him off the hook. |

| May-24-12 | | SimonWebbsTiger: Everybody knows Rick was a mean chess player, bar owner and fighter for freedom against Nazi oppression. (The first shot of Bogart in Casablanca is in evening attire, smoke in hand, pondering a chess position.) |
 |
| May-24-12 | | vinidivici: <scormus> yeah the Pun making fun on Sammy. <Jason Frost> Yeahh, but still, its strange for the game of the day. Whats make this the game of the day so it BOGART was playing the game. It wouldnt be GOTD if some other masters played it. |
 |
| May-24-12 | | offramp: This was the scene originally:
<Rick>: You know I want to understand some noise! <Sam>: [lying] No, I don't. <Rick>: You played it for her! She disturtled me by threatening to smoke. <Sam>: [lying] Well, I don't think I can remember... <Rick>: Kindly take my shoes off! [He is told that they are off.] No! There is a handcuff on them. The Baron says these things. I know what I am doing here with my collection of papers. It isn't worth a nickel to two guys like you or me but to a collector it is worth a fortune. It is priceless. I am going to turn it over to... Turn you back to me, please Henry [Blackburne]. I am so sick now. The police are getting many complaints. Look out. I want that note. Look out for Richard Teichmann for he is an old pal of mine. Come on, come on, Jim [Mason]. Ok, ok, I am all through. Can't do another thing. Look out mamma, look out for her. You can't beat him. Police, mamma, Helen, mother, please take me out. I will settle the indictment. Come on, open the soap duckets. The chimney sweeps. Talk to the sword. Shut up, you got a big mouth! Please help me up, Henry. Max [Lange], come over here. French-Canadian bean soup. I want you to play. Play it again, Sam! |

 | | King Sacrificer: <vinidivici: It wouldnt be GOTD if some other masters played it.> Same applies for most GOTDs. This game has a story and a good pun. I enjoyed watching Bogart, maybe the best chess player among celebrities, getting a draw against Reshevsky. I was actually waiting for this game to be added into the database. |

 | | estrick: <unferth:I'd expect a GM to play out a B v. N ending with pawns on opposite sides against an amateur--unless he was feeling generous. > 70 Game Simul. Suppose the GM spends an average of just 5 seconds on each move, including the time it takes to walk from one board to the next and become reacquainted with the position. It takes 6 minutes just to make one round of moves on every board. After several hours of this exhausting exhibition, I think most people who do this kind of thing are happy to bring as many games to a conclusion as quickly as possible. Why would you want to spend an undue amount of time on any single game, grinding out a difficult ending? Bogart played well, without making any howling blunders. It was probably very good politics for Sammy to tip his hat to the best chess player in Hollywood by offering him a draw at this point. Who knows, maybe Bogart invited him to a party or for a ride on his yacht or something, later on. |

 | | kevin86: I think the constant rolling of the steel balls negatively affected Reshevsky-I kid you not... or maybe Sammy didn't have his shirt tucked in... |
 |
| May-24-12 | | Jim Bartle: Remember, Bogart was already quite ill in 1956, which must have been quite evident at the time of this game. He died in January 1957. In his last year of life he saw only close friends and only at home (as told by Lauren Bacall), and his body was quite shrunken and weak from the cancer. So I could see Reshevsky just playing tranquilly with him. |

Lucky me, the pun got accepted two days after its "inception". It seems I was lazy and did not check if this rather obvious idea had been used before. Don't know if a non-paying member can check it, though? |

Certainly, respect is the right word. And ...
<Jim Bartle> .... I was wondering how many more months he had to live. I have always been a big fan of Bogey, and am saddened by his comparatively early death. His last film is a favorite of mine. I'm glad he gained a draw in this simul game against the USA number one. He obviously loved the game and it must have made him very happy. |

 |
| May-24-12 | | Granny O Doul: <InfoHunter> I would call it a paraphrase rather than a misquote. "Play it again, Sam" conveys the gist and can be apposite in other situations, whereas it is very unlikely that any of us will find ourselves in the moment where Rick's verbatim quote is the mot juste. |
