 | | Phony Benoni: Where did that pun come from? It's familiar, but I don't think it was ever used in a movie. Oh, wait, I know! This is the third game the pun was used for, the other instances being
H Bogart vs NN, 1933 (Oct-12-06) and
Reshevsky vs Capablanca, 1935 (Mar-24-12). So first a Bogart game, then a Reshevsky game, then one game with both of them. That should about do it. |

It's familiar, but I don't think it was ever used in a movie.> It is commonly but inaccurately thought of as having been said by Bogart's character in the 1942 movie _Casablanca_ to Sam the piano player (portrayed by Dooley Wilson). In truth, Ingrid Bergman's character first said, "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake; play 'As Time Goes By'." Later on Bogart said, "You played it for her, you can play it for me. ... If she can stand to listen to it, _I_ can. Play it." In 1972 Woody Allen made a movie entitled "Play It Again Sam", thus helping to perpetuate this misquote. Still, I can appreciate how well the pun fits here, be it a misquote or not. |

Whats the specialty of this game?> More than anything, because Humphrey Bogart was playing black ... which makes it worthy in my eyes. As for the pun, it is obviously referring to the fact that Reshevsky could've won the game. In the final position, I think there was almost no chance Bogart could've held a draw, but a timely and very classy draw offer by Reshevsky got him off the hook. |

After several hours of this exhausting exhibition, I think most people who do this kind of thing are happy to bring as many games to a conclusion as quickly as possible. Why would you want to spend an undue amount of time on any single game, grinding out a difficult ending? Bogart played well, without making any howling blunders. It was probably very good politics for Sammy to tip his hat to the best chess player in Hollywood by offering him a draw at this point. Who knows, maybe Bogart invited him to a party or for a ride on his yacht or something, later on. |

In his last year of life he saw only close friends and only at home (as told by Lauren Bacall), and his body was quite shrunken and weak from the cancer. So I could see Reshevsky just playing tranquilly with him. |

Certainly, respect is the right word. And ...
<Jim Bartle> .... I was wondering how many more months he had to live. I have always been a big fan of Bogey, and am saddened by his comparatively early death. His last film is a favorite of mine. I'm glad he gained a draw in this simul game against the USA number one. He obviously loved the game and it must have made him very happy. |

"Play it again, Sam" conveys the gist and can be apposite in other situations, whereas it is very unlikely that any of us will find ourselves in the moment where Rick's verbatim quote is the mot juste. |
