 | | Marmot PFL: The Russian TV coverage of this event is excellent, although I doubt Fischer would have liked it much. |

 | | Ulhumbrus: 52 Rg2 is an interesting resource: White's rook uses for the moment not a file but the second rank to tie Black's rook to the defence of the h2 pawn |

 | | whiteshark: Grishuk - McShane is a +oc +5:4 endgame. I don't see an immediate win Despite the +1.6 eval. |

 | | chessgames.com: We apologize for the technical mix-up this morning: of course this game is truly Aronian-Nakamura and not Carlsen vs Kramnik, 2012 as promised. We'll be back with more live chess tomorrow morning at 7:00am USA/Eastern time. Hope to see you then! |

| Jun-08-12 | | checkmateyourmove: i love Aronian's style of chess when he is on form. ! enjoyed both 12. Bc5 and 22. Bd7! |

Jun-08-12
 | | Ulhumbrus: An alternative to 13...Be6 is 13..Nd4, an alternative to 14...Qd7 is 14...Nd4, and after 15 e4 an alternative to 15...a6 is still 15...Nd4. For whatever reason Nakamura just does not play this move. |
| Jun-08-12 | | SamAtoms1980: Looks like Aronian played a White Dragon here. |
| Jun-08-12 | | Jim Bartle: On move 25 Aronian gave back the exchange he'd won with Rxc6, in order to win a pawn. Was he confident a one-pawn advantage was enough for the win, or did he see dangers in the position despite being up the exchange? |
Jun-08-12
 | | Kinghunt: I think Aronian had a choice between winning the e5 pawn and ending most of black's play, simplifying into an ending likely to win, or keeping the rook with an unclear position. I don't think there were any serious threats that could only be solved by giving back the exchange, but that's certainly the cleanest, most practical way to play. |
| Jun-08-12 | | Feuertrunken: <BadKnight: Thanks. I was hearing a joke recently that one passed pawn is faster than two pawns. I don't know who said that. Obviously it depends on the position.> Maybe you heard that in one of the last WCC game analyses by Kingscrusher and Chessexplained (one of the tiebreak-games). They were talking/joking about that in the video. :) |
| Jun-08-12 | | jussu: Maybe the engines are laughing at me, but anything else than 25. Rxc6 looks just painful to play, and it certainly offers white good losing opportunities. Since the alternative is a pawn-up ending (a master can probably automatically spot it as winning), there is really nothing to think once you have found the idea of 25. Rxc6 and 26. Qa1. |
| Jun-08-12 | | Fanques Fair: After 21- Nd5 Black shouldnīt allow this knight, I donīt see why Nakamura didnīt play 21-...,Bxd5,22- exd5 , Ne7, 23-Be6, Nf5, and it seems both sides have chances ... |
| Jun-08-12 | | Jim Bartle: OK, thanks kinghunt and jussu. |
| Jun-08-12 | | mrbasso: <both sides have chances>
Yeah, White has chances to win, Black has chances to lose...
21...Rad8 indeed seems to be the best practical chance. 22.Nxb6 h5 and so on... However this is all completely unnecessary:
Naka is not mediocre, Naka went nuts.
Why not 19...Be6 ?? |
Jun-08-12
 | | luzhin: Apparently Aronian had only about 5 minutes left on his clock when he played 19.Nf3 which might explain why Naka didn't just repeat with 19...Be6. But after 22.Bd7! Naka must have realised what a dumb call that was. |

 | | SetNoEscapeOn: Yet another great rivalry brewing right here. |
| Jun-08-12 | | jmi: <SetNoEscapeOn: Yet another great rivalry brewing right here.> Highly doubt it, Nakamura can make enemies in an empty room. He had already pissed off Kasparov by calling him an openings-only player and had previously boasted to "destroy Grischuk like a baby in the blitz" (unfortunately he lost 0.5-1.5 in the blitz) due to an error of his own making in the classical rounds (cf. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bsO... at 2:20) of this same tournament. |
| Jun-08-12 | | Atking: I don't understand 18.Ng5? Either 18...Bg8. Why not 18..BxN 19.BxB Nd4? This Knight is wonderful with many threats 20...Bb3 (21.Qd2?? Nf3+) or 20...f4 to trap the Bishop 21.gxf h6 22.Bh4 exf and 23...g5. |

Nf3+) or 20...f4 to trap the Bishop 21.gxf h6 22.Bh4 exf and 23...g5.> In the press conference after the game, Aronian gave the line <18...Bxg5 19.Bxg5 Nd4 20.Bg2 f4 21.gxf4 h6 22.Bh4 exf4 23.f3>. I'm not sure what he - or Nakamura - thought about it, since they started to show the conference when Aronian was already discussing a later stage in the game (I just saw the line on the computer screen when he was analyzing another variation), but it does look nice for Black - and it's also the engine's top recommendation. |
