The two statements are not mutually exclusive. Besides take a look at the rating of the players involved.

Yes, but these games were ridiculously short draws with almost no content (not to mention the players' ratings), so they don't really mean anything.

Hesam7: <Stonehenge> actually the game you have posted looks rather strange now. Since, as pointed out by chessbomb commentary, after 12. ... Qxa2? 13. Kd1!! Black is actually lost.

Strongest Force: Magnus is playing with a great deal of energy here. Because The Russians are afraid of him he will at least draw.

:-) nice one.

jaume19592: I don't believe Moro is afraid... I think he is not a confortable player for Carlsen.

kingscrusher: I remember the good old Lloyds Bank masters. One year Shirov won it. One year Morozevich won it. And when I looked at the demo boards, they seem to be very exciting hack-attack style games. I think he won it with 9.5/10! Something like that anyway.

Not good enough, I guess.

Eyal: Yeah, after 12...Qxa2? 13.Kd1!! black would be practically lost; removing the knight from the pin attacks the queen as well as e4 & d5; e.g., 13...Nxc3+ 14.Nxc3 Bxc3 15.Qxc3 O-O 16.h4 g4 17.b3! (threatening to capture the black queen with Ra1:

Eyal: <Stonehenge> You're right, the rating was actually ok... just the content of the games was minimal.

waustad: To answer my own question I think the commentator is Ian Rogers.

tamar: Black's problem is that White can force exchanges, when he will be left with a worse pawn structure, and no chances.

(threatening to capture the black queen with Ra1:> Then one interesting idea is the sacrifice 17...Nxc5 eg 18 Qxc5 Bf5 19 Qc3 Rac8. An alternative to 17 b3 is 17 h5 fixing the h6 pawn and threatening a number of attacks eg Rh4, f3, Bf4 and Bd3

Marmot PFL: The time to take a2 would have been move 11, but I doubt that was in black's plans. This is pleasant for white with better ending at no risk.

Strongest Force: Cool Luke is playing the Rossilimo to perfection. He will still need to use The Force to beat the Radja-man.

Ulhumbrus: By playing the capture Carlsen has prepared the move ...Bf5 as Bd3 can be answered by ...Nxd3. However it is not to be.

Eyal: Yeah, after the mass exchanges on c3 this looks like a bad endgame for Black.

Nice idea, but it doesn't work because of 20.Ra1!

Strongest Force: I agree with Nak's delay of c5; never-the-less, I am sure Nak's opening ides make Bobby turn in his grave.

Eyal: Still, Carlsen is great in endgames and has managed to save some very difficult ones. He now has another chance to prove his abilities, though clearly not of the kind he wanted...

Marmot PFL: 17 Bb5+ is first move that comes to mind, but may not be best. Black has no need to castle anyway, and the B may be better on e2. Rc7 is the other move.

tamar: Magnus has a wry expression after 17 Rc7, like maybe I should have trained for this event.
