Ulhumbrus: 16...f5 and 17...f4 weakens Black on the e file and on the square e4 as in the famous game La Bourdonnais vs McDonnell, 1834

19 Bb3 concedes the b1-h7 diagonal and moves the bishop to the obstructed a2-g8 diagonal. Instead of this 19 Rae1 occupies the weakened e file at once.

FSR: Larry Kaufman recommends this move order (2...d5 3.exd5 exf4!) in his two repertoire books in order to avoid the Bishop's Gambit line 2...exf4 3.Bc4 d5 4.Bxd5. However, in CG.com's database, Black has a serious plus score against both 4.Bxd5 and 4.cxd5 - a little better against the bishop capture, actually. Opening Explorer

Marmot PFL: No reason to avoid Bishop's Gambit as it's rather easy to equalize. 3 Nf3 has better score and has always seemed harder to meet

  FSR: <Marmot PFL> True. But 3.Kf2!! is the best-scoring move. :-)

FSR: However, 3.Kf2!! Qh4+ 4.Kf3 is carrying a good thing too far. Nash vs J Jordan, 1979 Instead, 4.g3! wins. Opening Explorer

FSR: I was just on playchess.com repeatedly attempting to play the KG with 3.Kf2!! My opponents must have been wary of that, however, since they kept playing the Sicilian or declining the KG in weird ways.

Shams: <FSR> I love the Tumbleweed! Have a hard time when Black fianchettos his LSB, though.

Marmot PFL: <FSR> White is a guy I played over 30 years ago. I was NOT black in this game, obviously some caveman type who just grabs everything.

FSR: <Marmot PFL> Odd how if you look at the games on CG.com, Columbus, Ohio is/was the epicenter of the Tumbleweed.
