Jan-22-18  Delboy: Totally forgettable game, chosen for the pun only. Another weak move by CG

  FSR: <Delboy> is correct.
Jan-22-18  Jamboree: Why did white resign in the final position? Sure, she's two pawns and an exchange down, but she's been working for an attack for many moves, saccing the material to get there, and then right when the attack was finally about to take shape -- she just up and resigns before even trying!

The whole point is that white can now try Nd6, hoping to maneuver it back up to e4 or f5, leading to all sorts of classic mating themes against the black king with the Q+B+N barging in.

If black overreacts by pushing the f pawn, all sorts of different weaknesses appear. But if he doesn't push it, white has the immediate shot BxN (on d5), and then after exd5 there are tactics and mates galore and black could easily slip up.

Now, I wouldn't be surprised that with perfect play black could repel the attack and cruise to victory eventually with his extra pawns, but gosh at least make him prove it. I see at least six ways for black to blunder; why not give the chance to mess up? That's how games are won -- maximizing your opponents blunder-opportunities.

I suspect the resignation happened because the two players were from the same family or marriage. No other logical explanation for it.

GrahamClayton: I don't see why Black needed to win the exchange with 12...♕b6 - 12...cxb4 13. axb4 ♗xb4 is a simple win of a pawn.
Jan-22-18  wtpy: Agree game could have been better. White had chance to keep things equal with 17 c4 but instead played fecklessly and soon lost.

offramp: Bargan Basement seems more appropriate.
Jan-22-18  goodevans: <wtpy> It seems that move 17 was indeed the turning point. White was fine until then.

I'd have played <17.Nc3>. This wins the black Q as black simply can't allow <18.Nxd5 exd5 19.Qxd5> which would be devastating. Stockfish prefers <17.Qg4> as even stronger. Stockfish also agrees with you that <17.c4> is equal.

I can't see the point of <17.Bf4> but I think the biggest thing wrong with it is that white no longer has Nc3 as an attacking option.

LMAO! good one

Jan-22-18  dumbgai: Fortunately I don’t have any games in the CG database because several of my blunderfests would likely be chosen as GOTD due to my name which is quite high in pun potential.
Jan-22-18  morfishine: As horrific as this game is, the hilarious posts make it worthwhile! Keep'm comming! lol

Breunor: Maybe Svetlana got annoyed at how long Sergei was taking, so she resigned to get to the store in time to take advantage of the bargains!
