lost in space: This is not a pawns game (were normally c4 is not played in the first few moves but either a Queens Indian or a closed Catalan. So what. Not bad but also not an exiting game.

  haydn20: Fritz thinks it's a Catalan--and a very dull line at that!
Jun-16-12  hellopolgar: i saw 36. Qg5+ which is a move that computer engines don't even think about. it leads to a draw sadly.
Jun-16-12  solskytz: I thought that 39. Ke5 with the idea to continue to d6 gave some winning chances, as it's actually Nakamura who has the passed pawn (on the e file) in this position, and king support is essential, even if you need to sacrifice a couple of pawns.

I once beat a higher rated opponent in classical times control that way, to the utter astonishment of everybody around.

Jun-16-12  diceman: <solskytz: I thought that 39. Ke5 with the idea to continue to d6 gave some winning chances>

...the problem is
39...Qd3 by black attacks the e pawn.

If you try to save it by
40.e4 (40...Qd4+ wins the e pawn)

Jun-16-12  whithaw: I can understand Nakamura slowing things down against Carlsen. He's been going down in flames in the recent past, and it's important that he changes that momentum, takes more control of himself and feel things out a bit... He'll get Carlsen, the only question is when...
Jun-18-12  solskytz: <Diceman> right. That handles my idea in this game...

wonder if my opponent back then had a similar resource...

there was a moment when he had an almost checkmating combination in 5 moves - he thought it was checkmating, I saw my king escaping to the 6th rank...
